Banging a safe to open it? Gun safes effected?

Post by Antie » 11 Jul 2013, 9:21 am

I imagine everyone's probably seen the video's on youtube or wherever where someone bangs on the top of a safe as they turn the handle and the safe unlocks.

At the moment I have an old keyed, strong-box type setup for my FA storage but am looking into getting a proper FA safe and expanding my collection a bit.

Anyone know if any of the vault-handle style gun safes are effected by the banging weakness mentioned above? I know in the videos I've seen the "safes" in question all look like super-cheap ones, and they're only ever small valuable size safes. I don't imagine the gun safes suffer from this weakness but thought I'd ask anyway.

I'm looking at the usual brands. Hyskor, Lokaway and Spika safes etc. Open to any other suggestions.

Cheers.

I know the videos you're talking about.

As you say, it only ever seems to be the crappy chinese ebay style safes that have the problem. The safes you can pick up and carry off or open with a crowbar in 5 minutes anyway.

Never seen anything at all to suggest a good brand safe like Spika or Hyskor is effected by the problem. Much heavier so banging on them won't do much, and I'm sure they have a much stronger/heavier/better locking mechanism.

I have a Spika with a digital keypad and turn handle and it's fine.

Happens with a crappy Bunnings safe that I had. The door would sometimes open by itself after rattling round in the boot of the car after a drive.

I remember reading something about there being a batch of handgun safes a while ago which were effected by this?

It was from a reputable brand... They did a recall but for the life of me I can't remember who it was...
