Making stuff

Post by Noisydad » 04 Oct 2013, 8:33 pm

Just about finished making my new 10 gun (round) safe with a turn table rack in it and cooking up the next project - a heavy duty cast aluminium 'C' frame reloading press.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Turn table sounds interesting.... Got some pics to share?

I've crammed plenty of rifles into crowded safes, never seen a revolving rack though.

Interesting... I'm keen to see pictures if possible?

The safe is made from an old hot water cylinder. The door has 3 internal hinges and 3 locking bolts operated from a single handle. Will see if I can post pics tomorrow. The press hasn't been started yet - have to make the wooden pattern first then cast it. Of course you can buy this stuff but sometimes you just feel like a good project or two out in the shed.

The safe will be lined with boat carpet to help control condensation and scratching of my babies.

That's great... With the recessed bottom and everything for the stocks.

I wouldn't know where to start making such a thing.

Thumbs up.

A layer of carpet and a coat of paint and that's going to look great.

The turntable is mounted on a big old ball bearing that I had in my useful box so it rotates very smoothly.

Just working out how I'll fit an internal lock - (probably an ordinary Lockwood dead lock that will stop the 3 locking bars inside from moving), so the key hole will be pretty flush with the front of the door. I'd rather not use a padlock coz they can be attacked from outside with bolt cutters and they look a bit...ummm...."lumpy".

It'll be bolted to the floor with bolts under the turntable ( which dismantles for installation). I have a workshop full of lathes, cutting, bending, squashing and welding gear. Oh, and a back yard (non ferrous) foundry to cast my new reloading press that'll be my next project.
Making steel do what want kinda gets me going :-)

A thought for the locks.

On my shed I cut a small hole big enough to get a hand through, with an external hinged flap, then use the slide bolt system with padlocks on the inside.
That way the locks can't be cut. After you drop a couple of keys inside, you get used to it.

But I think the old Lockwood is the go, much nicer.

Thank you- it was an enjoyable project. The big question though....Is ten parking spaces enough given there is eight in there already and a Sharps in .40-65 coming this week.

With a new paint job you could make it look like a 16" round from the USS Missouri

Good job!

you could put the whole thing on a rotating block so the locking mechanism and door rotated to the back then paint it up to look like anything other than a safe. The 16inch shell would look a bit out of place though. Gives me any idea for a covert safe convert an old hot water system keep the pipes going into it and out of it and hide a safe inside.

It would be the opposite to the Winchester fridge that was recently out as a prize - the fridge was made to look like an open gun safe.

The reason it was painted cream was to have it stand less. Its also installed so as it's not in direct view from a window.
