Vapor capsules for gun safe?

Post by Deco » 05 Oct 2013, 12:10 pm

G'day guys.

New shooting here looking for some advice to keep his baby in good condition.

I have a Browning X-Bolt in walnut/blued steel and a regular gun safe.

My local store had a stand of rust protection vapor capsule things for lining your safe with to protect your rifles.

Are they worthwhile for Adelaide weather you reckon? I'm not exactly living on the beach in the salt air...

Cheer all :)

I usually chuck in the silicon bead things that come in everything you buy these days.

Chuck in a few news ones and take out the old ones each time to soak up any moisture in the air.

Out of curiosity, what does a fancy one set you back?

I don't think he's talking about those though VIC, if I'm thinking of the right thing they emit a vapour or whatever you want to call it into your safe that protects things from moisture, doesn't just suck it up.

Haven't used one, but that's the idea AFAIK.

Yer, ZERUST or DERUST or something like that... Little yellow sponge things.

Personally I just use the silicon capsules too without any worries.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

$10 - $150 depending on the size you need for the area you want to protect.

Judging by the video they put on with the nail in the water they work a treat.

$10 for one that does 2sq feet according to their info.

So $20-$30 would cover an average safe for 2 years. Hardly a fortune for a little extra care for your gear.

If you take the silica gel bags that "come in everything" out and warm them up in a frypan or leave them in the sun for a day, they are good to go again. You will notice that the bag looks a little fuller than when you put it in and this is time to do it. I live in the Northen Rivers of NSW now and we regularly experience 80% or more humidity during the summer months and I have had no probs using this method with a gun oil wipe down before putting my precious away.
