1911 thumb safety adds resistance, but doesn't stop firing

Post by Tinked » 11 Jul 2013, 1:41 pm

Hi,

Posting this after reading a similar question elsewhere that didn't yet have a response, hopefully someone here knows the answer as it's a little worrying.

I was reading someone picked up a brand new 1911 and after getting it home found that when the thumb safety catch was engaged, it increased the amount of weight needed to pull the trigger, but with some force would still fire.

Pistol was taken back to the gun store and buyer was told that's the way they work, and that they only increase the force required to pull the trigger.

Seriously? :?:

I was looking to move into pistols but that sounds dodgy as if pistol safety's are supposed to work like this...

Nooooo. Safety should stop it firing, period.

Get someone (hopefully not the idiot at the gun store?) to look at it.

No way, Mate.

The safety should lock the sear against the hammer so that it can't be released, no matter how much pressure is applied.

To say that a firearm safety just increases the pressure required to discharge the firearm is complete rubbish.

Sounds like a staff member who just couldn't be bothered dealing with it.

Forgot to say, if you're asking for a friend etc. or someone you can pass on info to, get them to take it to someone who knows what there doing and get it fixed.

100% should not be like that.

Even tell them to contact the Police IMO. Surely selling defective firearms is some sort of breach of their dealer license?

They'll get someone hurt sooner or later overlooking this kind of stuff :x

Man that's weak. I'd be kicking up a storm if I picked up a new pistol with a broken safety.

Nothing's perfect, but to be told that's how it's supposed to be and knowingly send him on his way with a faulty safety... :x

Somebody needs their dealers licence reviewed...
