Ute rifle box

Post by whert » 05 Nov 2014, 9:17 am

Does anyone know of a company that makes ute rifle boxes?

Bunnings make steel tool boxes obviously but to get one long enough they're pretty wide and heigh. I only want something to carry 2-3 rifles max... Not 10.

They're all also mostly padlock jobs, crowbar or a pair of bolt cutters and they're off. I know it's not legal requirement and I'm not going to store them in the ute overnight or anything but a small more secure one would be perfect for size and peace of mind.

Anyone know of such a box?

I'll be buying an aluminium gull wing type box in the next couple of weeks for my tray back ute to cart shooting irons around in. They're $400 from "all tools" type suppliers and light enough to take it off when I need to.

Aren't we overlooking the obvious here?

Buy a 4 gun safe and bolt it in.

What else is going to be the size and build of a 4 gun safe other than a 4 gun safe?

Gun safes are not very waterproof. Might be an issue in the back of a ute. I have an aluminum one that came from Blueys Ute World. http://www.blueys.com.au/boxes/#lockaboxes
Its light but strong. Has plenty of locks and is waterproof. Works for me.
They also make custom boxes.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

You need to follow the lead of our Americans brothers Image

I saw a lot of setups like this when I was in Arkansas.

I would get less then 100m down the Main Street with that set up before 5 patrol cars and a news chopper would be on me!

Saying that it would be an awesome way to do it

Random bit of trivia here - If I remember right the reason (among others I guess) for having rifles in the window like that was for legal reasons too.

Not allowed to carry a concealed weapon, so you stick it up high, visible in the back of the truck.

Can't remember where I read that but yeah...

Pretty sure in VIC there is something in FA Act about firearms needing to be out of reach while transporting.

In the early 90's in Las Vegas you always had to have your weapon in clear sight, as Supporter stated as it was to do with concealment laws!!!!! Please remain in the car and place both hands on the wheel at all times. Wow that takes me back. Although that normally only applied to hand guns!!!!

One advantage with using a Bunnings or Blueys' type box is that it will just look like "another work ute box". Throw a gun safe in the back and it'll stick out like dogs balls or a custom made box for that matter.

just a thought.

That's a good point mate. Definitely don't want to draw attention to it.

Even if it was empty some ****** would try and break into it sooner or later probably.

Bolt a decent "tradie" type tool box down across the tray( if that's what you've got ), make sure it has good quality, heavy metal locking lugs and don't scrimp on cheap padlocks. That's more inconvenient for you but doubly so for them. It would take a brazen fella to climb in the back of your ute with a big set of bolt cutters / hacksaw / cordless grinder to get into it.

Google 'custom toolboxes' , there is a heap of manufacturers that will make whatever size and type of box that you want.

For a box to hold 3-4 rifles you will be looking at $300-$500 depending on features, thickness etc.

Yikes, Albat, definitely a BIG NO, NO as far as I'm concerned.

I bought one of these from Bunnings
https://www.bunnings.com.au/rhino-1200- ... e_p5810603

Bit of chain to attach it to the ute. Couple padlocks on the box. Will hold a dozen rifles plus gear. Waterproof. And easy to remove when you are not using it.

I put some castor wheels on one end so I can pick it up from the opposite end and wheel it around.

Great for range days as I can wheel the whole thing up to the bench.

I saw this in bunnings today. Too short for some of the big target rifles but plenty of hunting rifles would fit

George Taylor stores used to have a specific Ute rifle box, almost like a safe. Have not seen them recently. I just use whatever toolbox I have bolted down at the time.
