300 win mag muzzle brake makes it recoil like... What?

Post by RDobber » 09 Oct 2013, 4:54 pm

Guys,

I've got a 300 win mag for the range which is fine for me, but too much recoil for the wife.

She's not huge on shooting... Probably not worth buying her a rifle of her own, but would still like for her to have a few shots when she feels like it.

Putting a muzzle brake on my rifle comes to mind... If it makes recoil manageable for her and I get less recoil as a bonus, then great.

I haven't shot one with a brake before though so don't know how much recoil reduction to expect.

Comparing to other calibres, 300 win mag muzzle brake recoils like.... what?

If I can get a good idea of a similar calibre I'm sure someone at the range would be kind enough to give her a shot and if the recoil's manageable I'll go ahead and get a brake fitted to mine.

Cheers.

Noticeably less than .308 win IMO.

Even less I would say. Pretty equal to a .243 from memory.

I shot a savage bench rifle in .300 win mag with a brake a little while ago, less recoil than my .243 sporter.

About .243 recoil depending on rifle weight and load I reckon.

Just a note on Muzzle brakes:
Some ranges don't like you to use them, too much noise for shooters on either side.

A few guys using them at my local range, you just get shunned to the end of the line - which is fair enough :)

That's on the cards too.

If we go down that road we were looking at 22lr if she just wants a range plinker, or 7mm if I can talk her into a hunting rifle

I shot a 338wm fitted with a muzzle brake last weekend, Surprised the hell out of me.
I'm recoil shy, due to an injury, and it took some convincing to get me to have a go.
Considerably less recoil than my 6.5 x 55 which aren't much anyway.

Remember though RDobber, a muzzle brake is not a silencer, if your wife is a bit coy with shooting, she still won't like the blast that comes from your rifle.

Nah she's not shy about the noise in the slightest.

Bruising her shoulder gets old real fast though.

It's strictly the recoil that's the problem, not noise.
