In the market for new 10-14 gun safe

Post by cruze82 » 14 Dec 2014, 6:32 pm

I'm in the market for a new safe and would know what people have and how they rate it

It needs to be at least a 10-14 gun safe

I've got a 14 rifle (bottom 3mm), 10 pistol (top 6mm) safe from fox safes in Ulladulla. Heavy as, mutually key 7 dogging bolt main door. The model I got was deeper as well which suits scoped rifles leaning on a rack. It's powder coated. I'm fairly happy with it, the doors come off easy.

My small safe was advertised as 30 gun capacity but barely holds 15. Don't believe their capacity claims and if you plan to buy more than 7 or 8 rifles then look for something bigger.

Yep I reckon they work those capacity figures out on unscoped rifles or shotguns, mines a 14 gun from memory and I'm flatout fitting 11 in it and 3 of them don't have scopes (shotgun).

True.

Mine is 16 as I said... Has 16 notches to lean rifles up against but you couldn't fit 1 in each without piling them up all over each other.

It's say 12 max, and they'd be wall to wall in there. Clanking on the way in and out.

Got a budget Cruze?

There will be many similar size/capacity options but price will be all over the place depending on other factors like weight, fire resistance, build strength, etc. etc.

Could be $350 or $2k.

A few for that.

Spika SCH1 or Lokaway LOK4CHDKT

155kg and 153kg.
Ammo / Cat H compartment
16 capacity (probably not really, but 10-14 more realistic)
Both digital keypad and key override.

$950 - $1000 for either.

Buffalo creek to a 165kg once that's about the same price, but quotes 10 rifle capacity.

Depends where you come down on that 10 - 14 number.

As an example, Buffalo River safes specifications are 52 cm - 53.5 cm wide for their 10 gun range.

I'd want a minimum of 9cm width for rifles, so that gives a comfortable 5 and a tighter 6 in the back row of their 10 gun safe. if you add a divider you could fit a front row in, which would make it difficult to access rifles in the rear, and get the advertised capacity without the rifles knocking together.

Don't rely on their advertised storage capacity. Get the safe dimensions and work out the capacity yourself, based on the average width of your own rifles.

Yeah it's never right.

If it says '16' that's 16 with every single one of them hard up against each other from side to side.

Pain in the ass to place in and expect lots of scratches.

Could agree more.

I was going to say almost the exact same thing, take the advertised holding capacity and divide it by 2... that's how many rifles it will comfortably hold, unless you plan on lying it on its back and stacking them in.

Yep, the stated capacity is only right if you're playing gun Tetris.

I have a 16 gun safe which would hold 12 while being very snug, if you had nothing else in it.

Couldn't fit in another without scratching them against each other constantly.

(I have 3 rifles but I can see the 12 limit from moving them around in there from sides, corners, backs... when setting it up and figuring out where things lived.)
