brett1868 wrote:I have both and it depends what rifle I'm grunting around as to which pack I use. Small rille on sling I prefer a day pack, big rifle I prefer bumbag as I use a biathlon sling which rules out using a daypack. I carry 2 700ml canteens no matter which pack I'm using cause you can survive without food but without water you're soon f***ed.

Thanks brett1868

I have recently started to carry my water in a stainless steel (unpainted) canteen with titanium mug around the base as these also allow me to boil water/cook should the need occur. Have always used a bladder or the plastic Nalgene bottles but have recently made the switch to metal.

It depends a lot on what type of hunting. If you chase pig dogs then you don't want anything flapping about or long straps hanging down that will hang you up on the scrub as you run through it . I have seen a couple of injuries that way even got hurt myself once. The neat fitting back pack is best for that. If you stalk deer then it's no as frantic as chasing dogs so other options could work ok . You have to look real hard at what you actually do and tailor your gear to suit that .
20 years down the track you have suffered enough failures to know exactly what you need . There is so much technology now a days that it is very easy to be over equipped .

Yeah it pulls you up pretty quick.

In the jungle they have this barbed vine they call Gotyou vine and boy don't that grab you like a octopus on heat and a million tiny hooks dig into your skin.

I have both but have been using the bum bag with a camel back a lot more. Carry a knife small first aid kit and a few rounds of ammo in both but the backpack is only there if I'm taking lunch out.

I know the "R" word is a bit scary to you old farts but bumbag wins every time where running is involved.

I know it is daggy but I now use a vest similar to a fly fishermans. Spreads substantial loads far better and doesn't impede me at all.

Can't say for sure because I've only used a civvy one but I'm not carrying anywhere as much weight as the army lads would.

My observation is that I don't really feel the weight shifting while you run when it's hanging off your hips but a full bag bounces around too much and is a pain in the arse.

Not the same bush but similar thing... When I was a 12 or 13 or something I was bashing around in the bush. I slid down a 5-6m dirt hill on my feet planning to wade into what was basically a cave of leaves at the bottom to wash off speed as there were logs and other things that appeared worse options to run into.

Couldn't tell from the top of the hill, but it was a little leaf on the front then all rose bush vines in the middle. Momentum carried me in about a metre and a half into the thorns before I came to a stop. :problem:

Took about 45 minutes repeating a process of unhooking self, move a foot forward into fresh hooks, rinse and repeat.

Good times as a kid

I use a hydration pack that has a couple of extra pockets for thick scrub or short hunts.
I also use a 25l dutch army surplus day pack if I am going out all day or have some need for extra gear/space.
Planning on going exploring on Monday for some good campsites and hunting grounds :)

theyre for the metrosexual type aren't they? ;)

What are you carrying? a bottle, snacks, gps, ammo....they'll fit in a sturdy (or 2) ex-mil pouch hung off a webbing belt.

I've been wearing an issue camo bum bag on a web belt with a water bottle, knife, pouch for 10 rounds and a snake bite bandage. The bag contains food, head torch, spare knife, bone saw, lollies. Properly adjusted it works really well and you don't have shoulder straps in the way. Now, who's a bloody metrosexual eh??? :x

I remember my legs aching and not getting a sense of satisfaction.

Maybe it's in the clothes, every runner I see these days have fluorescent aqua or pink Nikes on. The folk who make safety vests should call them for tips on making stuff brighter.

Looks like it's more important to look like you run than actually do it as far as I can see.

I see 50 people walking in these neon shoes for every 1 running.

OK, enough of this bumming around, here's my set up!

I use this for calling feral dogs, so NO running or fast walking, mainly sneak into position, step up and call and then move onto next position.

I've set it up so that the main bag is on my right side and yes, I'm left handed. In the basic pouch I carry spare mag, spent rounds, drink bottle. On the R/H side is another small pouch, holds phone and gas lighter.

Main bag, well what ever I need for the morning or afternoon. The web belt I slip a couple of pants loops over at the sides.

If I'm in the thick stuff and take the shottie too, I add another basic pouch. Works for me. Ammo box for size caparison

Yes, shoots really well through the .243W as does Highland. I think same ammo, different box according to the LGS bloke. Typical groups under 1" for 5 rounds at 100 yds, elbows for a rest, projectiles were 95gr SP . I just used it for running the rifle in,

The powder is a bit dirty but...

AusTac, here's my though process on bag selection:
http://myshootingjourney.com/2016/08/15 ... selection/

I am noticing that the more I go, the more I get rid of things or replace with something a lot smaller and of better quality. The bag is working very well for me. I was using it as a backpack last time and it was pretty comfortable in that configuration too.
