Head torches

Post by Pom » 15 Feb 2015, 3:16 pm

How are head torches these days?

Been a while since I've used one, back when to get some decent light you had to have one about the size of a 6v batter on your forehead.

Are the little LED ones all they're cracked up to be?

Yep, the quality ones are great. I use a led lenser that houses 4 aa batteries when hunting on foot or from the quad bike. Left on high it lasts for a good couple of hours, with 4 spare rechargeable aa's im my pocket im set for a good run.

head torches are invaluable around camp IMHO

i've owned a few over the years from a big 3C cell petzel "caving" jobby to some compact ones.

this little led lenser H4 is great and comes in a plastic case so you or the kids can use it as a hand torch as well

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LED-Lenser-H ... 54100f9cea

currently i'm using this cheap unit with a decent cree T6 LED and 2 X 18650 batteries and chargers for the car or house. it's bright, focusable but has a half power mode and a strobe mode. yes i know it's a cheap piece of crap but it works really well

A little more than most will want or need but for the gadget and modded boosted LED light buffs here is my tip
Nitecore HC90

For all other lights here's a list which includes some great lights to mount on rifles or use as hand held spot lights.

You can get cheap ones that go ok.

The one i use at the moment is a BlackDiamond. Bought it because it is compact and has a variety of settings with dimmable main spot beam, close range flood beam, strobe and red light (good for fishing or finding stuff without killing night eyes.

Looking at upgrading to one of these Olights and handing the BlackDiamond to Her,Indoors because her head torch is from the Neolithic period:

Pretty happy with my LED Lenser H7R, bright enough for most things, USB rechargeable, has a dimmer on the back, none of those annoying pita flashing modes!
Also has the excellent led lenser zoom function.

Newer brighter version:

Not quite a head torch but I have one of these little ones, the LED Lenser P5.2

Image

Single AA battery in their, the 'torch' bit would be the equivalent of the head unit ones except the battery is in the handle and not on the back of the mount.

Great for the size, with the zoom on (zoom? right word for a torch?) at 30 metres it highlights a 3m area with ample light. Gets getter closer of course.

Triang wrote:"candle power"

A candle
Candlepower (abbreviated as cp) is an obsolete unit expressing luminous intensity, equal to 0.981 candela. It expresses levels of light intensity in terms of the light emitted by a candle of specific size and constituents. In modern usage candlepower equates directly to the unit known as candela.

"Candlepower" is largely an obsolete term. However, it is still sometimes used to describe the luminous intensity of high powered flashlights and spotlights. Narrow-beamed lights of all sorts can have very high candlepower specifications, because candlepower measures the intensity of the light falling on a target, rather than the total amount of light emitted. A given lamp will have a higher candlepower rating if its light is more tightly focussed.[2]

Only a few artificial light sources, such as military photoflash bombs, have the very high candlepower ratings characteristic of narrow-beamed spotlights but, simultaneously, a wide unfocussed distribution of light.

Just my opinion but Led Lenser are like MagLite. A once great product that has stagnated and been over taken by others that are ether cheaper or only slightly more expensive.

You wont be disappointed buying one, until you see it in action next to one of the new school jobbies!

For one Fenix I can have twenty odd ebay cheapies, or ten energisers, all do as good a job (as far as I can tell) and I can have more than one kicking about.

for the price of one land cruiser I get by 26 old Ladas, not much of a recommendation, there's cheap crap and quality products when you're buying anything,

Do you apply the same logic when your buying guns and Amunition?

For the price of one purdey I can buy 20 Lambers, 25 akkars, 8 Berettas, etc etc,

For the price of 1 packet of norma I can buy five packets of PPU

Honestly I ride a bike quite a bit and my $5.00 cree bike light doesn't stop me from keeping up with my mates with some pretty flash gear(oh, I ride a giant and for the price of an orbea I can buy six giants and still keep up).

There is great value and over the top stupidly expensive for what it is- Fenix is in that range as far as I am concerned.

If it does the job as well who cares if it is cheap?(oops, some people do)
