Any point in flash hider?

Post by lapp » 13 Mar 2015, 12:56 pm

Outside of a military/covert setting where 'hiding' really is life and death is there any point in a flash hider at all?

Anything for civilian setting? I see they're on a rifle or two here, but by the time you've fired a shot anything you were hunting is down or has run off from the bang, forget seeing the flash to realise you are there.

Just wondering why they still do them here then?

Nay, not really as I can't see any advantage or disadvantage in a civilian flash hider, not unless feral dogs get armed and start returning fire.

IMHO Nope, no point at all, bit like the fitment of muzzle breaks on anything under a heavy 30 cal magnums - simply for some supposed "good looks"

If one was spotlighting I suppose it could reduce the flash to the benefit of the shooters eyes/night vision slightly.

That's just thinking out loud though, maybe not.

Dunno about the states but walking around the streets with a rifle as a prop is kind of a no-no here

sha is close - one of the earliest and best-known use of a flash hider was the one fitted to to the No. 5 "Jungle Carbine", which with its shorter than usual barrel produced a flash considered to be excessive, and likely to disturb the user's night vision. They are not designed to hide the firer from the enemy - that is not possible.
Why the Russians did not bother with a flash hider on their Nagant carbine is a mystery - they produce a particularly impressive flash after dark.

They're not?

I realised they don't completely hide the flash 100%, but I thought the idea was mostly to reduce firer signature.

One would think the name would give the idea behind them away. :unknown:

The point is they go with your empty tactical vest you bought on ebay and your combat boots that aren't for wearing in the bush
