Water repellents on rifles

Post by wayward » 19 Mar 2015, 10:08 am

You know the water repellent sprays they sell?

Do you guys think there would be a use for this on a hunting rifle that's likely to get wet? A light coat to keep the water off and the corrosion away?

Dunno how it relates to moving parts or cleaning/chemicals in shooting is the thing.

I'm thinking more trouble than it's worth.

You've be taking it off every time you clean the rifle anyway.

A spray repellent is going to have an adhesive element of some sort to it.

I wouldn't want that working its want through the bolt, action or magazine.

The other problem with any of the water repellents is they usually have silicone in them these days, not great on gripping surfaces.

WD40 very light smear on the action and barrel works great but I clean mine meticulously after every hunt/shoot so I don't bother.

As long as you're cleaning your rifle regularly there would be no need for such a thing.

Dare I ask... As you looking at this as a solution for not cleaning your rifle after a hunt?

Just a light wipe over with a rag and a light oil - 'Singer sewing machine" is what I use. If you're worried about water getting down the bore, just use a Condom BUT DEFINITELY NOT a "Glow in the Dark" one. :D
Then again for hunting purposes at least you'd know where your mate is.

I guess being able to get away with a little slacking off, yeah.

I always run a brush through the bore after shooting. Wondered if this would let you go a little longer without the rest for a while.

I think it's something you'll regret later.

Half ass it and you'll get rust spots, maybe later rather than sooner. But eventually.
