Dewey Survival Machete

Post by VICHunter » 22 Mar 2015, 8:28 am

One to toss into the ring for the knive vs hatchet discussions.

Couldn't find it online, but his is a photo from the latest Hunter mag, the Dewey Survival Machete.

dewey-survival-machete.jpg
dewey-survival-machete.jpg (44.3 KiB) Viewed 6672 times

425mm long.
700g.
Unsharpened edge false edge on the back for a point.
The block at the base of the grip is actually a hammer, and the point of the hilt is for breaking glass.

Like I said couldn't find it online, maybe SSAA got an advanced one for review or something. Looks like a contender for when they're available though.

Did come across that but the one they have pictured on their website at the moment doesn't have the hammer/glass breaker hilt. It's just a normal wooden grip.

Website not updated yet? :unknown:

Need to have it in the hand to feel the balance of how much of the weight's usable for the blade and the hammer but looks like a promising do-it-all.

Looks good enough in the picture. $110 seems like a steal for a quality blade like that.

I recently got a warranty replacement on a Gerber folder, took a year and a half .... but finally happened. They'd given up on importing folders because of the pen-pushers and knife laws, so it had to be imported from the US. Customs value for replacement was $12. Retail was $90....

Customs list price from manufacturer = $12
Manufacturer to importer +%100 = $24
Importer to distributor/agent + %100 = $48
Wholesaler to retailer +%100 = $98 - "10% Discount" = $88.20

BARGAIN! :drinks:    :wtf:

Not always the case with all product lines, but in many many cases, this is exactly how you get your end user price point in Australia.

gimmick maybe but they can be a handy bit of kit in the 4wd on a camping trip

i have a Kershaw Camp14 i bought as a bit of a joke on my bolo/barong/kukri owning mates but the thing is a beast. perfect for clearing a camp sight and a genuine alternative to a hatchet around camp. plus i'll be prepared when the undead turn up at my camp..... :sarcasm:

Yes, it's black and it's got a plastic handle but it's sharp out of the box, the grip is excellent and it's safer in the tray of the ute than a tramontina in a canvas sheath

Yep, many of them are made simply to attract cashed up city wankers who know no better.

I would prefer to throw in my brush hook or even just the fern hook and a half axe (all high carbon steel and except for the axe over 50 years old)in the back of the ute when camping.

Nup never needed a machete knife, got a chainsaw to do any real cutting with and a bread and butter knife to butter the bread with  I don't even take an axe these days (chainsaw handles all those duties too). :D

A lot of them do yes.

s**ty steel, designed to look 'cool' as much if not more so than do a job. Crappy handle or blade doesn't extend far enough into it etc.

This looks pretty solid to me though. As a 1 size fits all kind of tool.

If I had to cut wood a chainsaw is far more effective.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

No one mentioned cutting quantities of wood? That's miles away from what this is intended for.

We both know no knife is intended to cut the quantities of wood you'd use a chainsaw for.

Why are we arguing that?

I'll stick to a Husqvarna chainsaw thanks. What that pissy knife for....whittling wood or something?

Personally I take an axe and a smaller knife.

I try to avoid the jack of all trades master of none approach.

I do see the appeal though.

I thought youd just spray the blackberry now then torch them at the end of winter and just stand by with the shotgun for some fast paced smoking rabbit action

A property we shoot on at Orange NSW has a few gates out the back that rarely get used by the farmer but we go through them a bit to a camp site. Short of taking a whipper snipper over there I find slashing the grass/blackberry with a light cane knife or machete the quickest way to get the gates open when we haven't been up there for a while. He tends of to put cattle out there because some of the fencing needs work and he doesn't need the feed.

Sounds like you need to do like Ted does and get the whipper snipper into action mate  I like blackberry bushes, that's where the rabbits and foxes like to live so I won't be burning em out anytime soon. :D
