Sat phone reception / coverage

Post by padaro » 26 Mar 2015, 4:53 pm

Hi guys,

Trying to get an idea of whether one of these is worth it. No experience with them at this point.

Is it a far assumption that reception for these is about the same as a GPS unit?

If my GPS works in location X will a Sat phone work in the same place?

And if my GPS doesn't it wont.

Cheers.

They use different saterlites to gps, I've never had a problem with satellite phone reception once you have set yourself up with a clear view to the lower eastern sky if your on the geo network,

There are a few options available through different service providers wich use different satellite networks, some fixed saterlites some orbital.

Same concept but as one_wheel said different network.

They're the same in that they rely on line of sight to a satellite and if this was obscured by terrain or extreme weather they would not work, but coverage is much better than your average car GPS.

Location GPS also need 3 satellites to triangulate a location.

Sat phone only requires communication from 1 so the operating demands are less than a location GPS.

A mate I've hunted with a lot carries one.

I don't know the brand, wouldn't be an overly expensive one knowing him, and we've been just to just about every corner of Victoria and had coverage on it.

Mine must only be getting 2 because I look like I'm driving along the grass next to the road a lot

Takes pretty extreme conditions to knock out a sat phone.

I don't think you'd be hunting anywhere in Australia rough/remote enough to knock it out.

Check the website of whatever sat phone you are looking at, most if not all will have maps of their coverage. All that I've seen pretty much blanket the country.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?
