Trouble finding a good knife

Post by Rakk » 22 Oct 2013, 8:55 pm

Like the title says... I've checked out a few disposal stores camping stores and so on... Having trouble finding a good knife for camping/hunting.

Everything just feels cheap basically. I don't know why but the steel doesn't feel good, handles aren't great or whatever?

Anyone recommend a good knife? One piece is best I suppose but a solid folding one would be ok too.

What do you guys think?

I have a Colt 'bowie' style 1 piece knive with a dense rubber/plastic mix (feels like it to me, don't know the proper material name or anything) which I've had for about 16 years and it's nearly good as new.

As long as standards haven't dropped over the years I'd say check out some Colt knives.

Must be looooads of choice online. Get one shipped from the US?

Would be 1/5th the price too compared to Aus.

I believe we're restricted to importing single edged, fixed blade knives only in Aus which can limit your choices a fair bit.

Half the time we're not allowed to import a lump off wood if it's shaped like a rifle stock.

And knives are sharp!

That's my understanding.

A call to customs would be in order before you ship such things from the US IMO.

I'v bought 4 knives form over seas on eday without a hitch. The biggest of wich has a 15" blade. I had no dramas with customs, but the crossbow pistol came to me as a nasty letter from border security telling me that I was a naughty naughty boy, and if I wanted to challange them they were more tham happy to have me charged. One of ny favorite fixed blade knives is a Buck, they are well made.

Nah - the steel is to soft. My reloading press made from pistons is coming along though. I'll get some more of it done before I put pics up.

Can't say about field knives, but we have a set of cooking knives by Dexter Russel and they're fine.

Rakk,

Have a look at the second hand stores or 'boot sales' some people have no idea what they are selling.

F. DICK., and GREEN RIVER., are two popular old Butchers knives. Skinners, Stickers, Boners. Quality steel.

As for 'folders' I like my Victorianox, and an old Barlow that i've had since I was a kid, because they hold a good edge.
I see F. DICK do a folder, on E BAY.

Kizlyar do some good fixed blade stuff for about $130-$150 depending on the handle material.

Good steel to my eyes.
