Vaseline has fairly poor lubrication qualities. Normal grease would be far better. Any lubrication oil would be ok, including singer with a viscosity of perhaps 10 up to 90 gear box oil. But 90 might freeze up in the alpine regions.

Well OK, I'll try and keep it out of my alpine regions.. :thumbsup:

Compressor oil / air tool oil is very close to the Singer oil of old...

So I finally went to purchase the gun oil/lube today but saw two different products and wasn't sure if I should just stick with the lanox or is the other one better?

:drinks: hope every one had a good weekend

You can buy Singer Oil in Coles still.

Bought some the other day to redo some fishing reels, in the small white bottle that we all remember. It's where they keep car cleaning stuff.

I probably only said it 4 or 5 pages ago, but what the heck, this thread does keep going around in circles....gotta keep the punters entertained;

Singer oil, forrrgettaboutit
Light Machine oil. is what you need. (damn near the same thing)
Bunnings, small container, few buck...
Anyway, if you go to your local hardware store and ask for sewing machine oil....... :huh: :unknown:

But sir..... you're a bit blokey for sewing....
nah... its for mi guns..
Of course sir....

For the more economically minded;
1)add kerosine to your engine oil until you get the right consistency, maybe your mobile 1 synthetic... no?? nice and thin, does get in..
But to be honest; A rifle is not a sewing machine, it doesnt have small fine gears and tiny moving parts....
2) for the aerosol sheep juice fans - anhydrous lanolin, double boiler melt, add hydrocarbon distillate or Isopropyl alcohol, spray pack, bob's your proverbial :thumbsup:

Yep, but I usually use diesel to thin out oil, cause diesel is just a very light oil!

Just one thing to be careful about... A lot of solvents/cleaners don't like recoil pads and have a habit of turning them into piles of goo after you put them back in the safe.

Just keep them away from any rubber.

I use RemOil most of the time. If it's a high load bearing area, like the bolt raceways on the M1 Garand I'll use RIG. I'll also use rig on the outside of a gun if it's going to be exposed to wet conditions.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Interesting article on break free clp.

Break-Free CLP((R)) is a commercial cleaning, lubricating and preserving compound used in both the military and civilian sectors for maintenance of small- and large-caliber weapons. Like many commercial mixtures, there is very little information available on the toxicity of Break-Free CLP. Studies were conducted to characterize the biological effects of single or repeat dermal application of Break-Free CLP to the clipped backs of CD-1 mice. Break-Free CLP was applied neat, 50 microl three times of week for up to 2 weeks. Foci of epithelial ulceration were observed in skin sections from 22% of Break-Free CLP-treated animals in conjunction with markedly thickened epithelium suggesting that robust epithelial regeneration was occurring in these animals. Skin histopathology of Break-Free CLP-treated animals closely matched the histopathology from mice treated repeatedly with 2% croton oil in acetone (dermal irritation positive control). Serum alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly (P < 0.05) lower for mice treated with Break-Free CLP, 2% croton oil or 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) compared with negative and vehicle control mice. Skin nitric oxide (NO) levels were not significantly elevated for mice treated with Break-Free CLP but were significantly elevated for mice treated with dermal irritation positive control compound DMBA. The cumulative skin changes in Break-Free CLP-treated animals support conducting a subchronic dermal application study. The observed decreases in serum alkaline phosphatase activity suggest that future studies should include the liver and bone as possible target organs. Additionally, dermal penetration studies could provide key health risk assessment information for characterizing the potential health risks associated with chronic dermal exposure to Break-Free CLP.
Good luck....

My Miroku shotgun manual says. Silicone, lanolin, machine greases and oils should be avoided.

So doses that mean I shouldn't use Lanox and Inox?

It is quite good at WD, but not long term protection or lubrication. Google the MSDS for it, its not that great.
Inox, Lanox, Mobil 1 or RemOil are what I normally use.
If you think Gun Oils are expensive try looking up pricing for quality watch oils (which have a six month shelf life after opening- and a watchmaker needs 6-8 different types and viscosity's on hand).

Let's cut through the BS.
For areas of high pressure such as lugs. Any light to heavy grease. Heavy oil may be OK short term such as sae90 gearbox oil.
For all other metal light oils of almost any type. Eg, sewing machine oil, light engine oil, up to say sae 30, ATF , or lanolin.
For timber keep all minerals oils away.

If you have a heavy oil, say sae90 it can be thinned down with diesel, it's just a light mineral oil and great for washing metal parts.

Guns are not like racing cars, they have slow moving parts and loads r not high. Basic Lubs are ok
