Time to upgrade the ultrasonic cleaner...

Post by petemacsydney » 12 Aug 2015, 2:45 pm

Planning to upgrade my current 1.3 liter ultrasonic cleaner (it's just not big enough!).

Thinking of getting one of these in either 3.2L or 6.5L.

I got a small one from this place, never got to use it as it said 1.3lt but was only 900ml so it went straight back, they have since removed the one I brought.

I've had both the small 3.7L and the larger 13L unit and they both worked well for cleaning brass. However the smaller unit developed some pin holes and started to leak after several months, I suspect there was some impurities in the steel that the cleaning solution eventually ate through. I'm going to strip the guts from it and make a barrel length stainless bath to attach it to for cleaning barrels obviously. Brass is good at absorbing ultrasonic energy so don't try to do too much at once, just run smaller batches. Since getting the Frankford Arsenal wet tumbler I wont be going back to ultrasonic purely because it does a better job and can hold more brass. I used to dry the brass in a Pizza oven at 60c for an hour but that tended to discolour the brass so now after wet tumbling I rinse in hot water then towel dry the outsides before placing in a food dehydrator for an hour. Results are outstanding with cases looking better then new inside and out.

Good advice there Brett ... I've obviously been overloading the u/s cleaner.
I've been unsatisfied with the results when trying cleaning 100 at a time.
I'll try 50 next time.

Lots of info here http://www.ctgclean.com/ultrasonic-cleaning-faq.php#eighteen With the important part and especially for the smaller cleaners is to keep items off the bottom and to have them in a basket.
