Hard gun case project

Post by headspace » 24 Aug 2015, 9:35 pm

Well I got all offended about the suggestions that I should have put some exotic glass on my CZ 9.3 and decided that it had to have a home fit for a classic looking rifle. I just spent close to the last couple of weeks on the job.

Nice
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Too nice to use I think, best hung in the pool room to be admired. I like the wooden handle but is it strong enough to support the weight?

Nice job there!

I'm embarking on a DIY job myself actually. I doubt it would be as nice as yours, it will be made from salvaged bed slats and held together with epoxy. Going to make a small wooden box to hold my ammo so that it doesn't roll around on the dash and at the same time I can just remove the outer packaging and place the internal pack straight into the box for easy assess of cartridges and keeping spent brass.

That's just green felt mate, like they put on pool tables minus the cigarette burns and beer stains  I had to make patterns of each section and cut it out, the glued in place with wood glue.
Most of the materials came from Bunnings even the brass corner bits that I used to stop the corners getting damaged, also makes it look a nicer.

Here's another pic of the outside of the case. The wood is a quality ply of 7mm, the sides are all Tassie Oak. The handle was carved from a lump of spotted gum. The surfaces were stained to a darker colour than the original "pine" look and then given 3 coats of clear laquer, sanding between coats. The biggest problem is getting timber that has no warp in it. The corners were cut to 45 degrees and joined by glue and screw but I also used fine panel pins or light nails as well. I started off by laying the rifle on the uncut ply and sketching the outline, then measuring the overall size to come up with the length and depth of the case. That means you leave room for cleaning gear or anything else you want to carry, with a separate compartment for the bolt. It's designed to fit so that the bolt has to be removed. Cost of materials for what I have here would be around $80, more if you stuff up and have to go buy more wood.

Sorry mate I meant what did you use to make the shaped recess under the felt, what it's stuck to.

Hopefully that's clearer.
