Range bags and what to put in them

Post by DaleH » 28 Oct 2013, 1:16 pm

I am looking at setting up a range bag to take with me each trip. I am currently shooting silhouette so there is generally no need for targets etc. I was thinking of getting either a sturdy tool bag or specific range bag with the main contents being as follows:
small cleaning kit (three piece rod, bore snake, oil, cleaning cloth, brushes)
room for ammo / ammo boxes
Small first aid kit
leatherman multitool
small tool kit - screwdrivers, hammer, allen keys etc
gun / scope specific tools
pen / note book
Ear muffs (and spare batteries), ear plugs
Safety / shooting glasses
hat / cap
Small LED torch
hand held magnifying glass
string / cable ties / tape / super glue?
hand cleaner, tissues etc

Any other ideas on contents or on what makes a good range bag / box?

I think a breech flag is about the only thing you're missing.

Good point. We dont use them at the club but it would not hurt to include them.
Another thing that is not needed at my club but may be at others is a range flag.

Range keys, copy of FA licence and SSAA / club membership also wouldn't go astray

After a few more replies I will put together an updated list

A little ribbon pole (or whatever you prefer) for judging wind at your target.

It could be worth expanding the scope of this to include what other items you could need when taking the bag on a general shooting / hunting trip.

Knife
compass
maps
etc
I can do range and general list then

I know you said you're shooting silhouette and wouldn't usually need targets.

I'd still say keep a picket and an couple of small bull eyes targets in your kit.

Sooner or later you knock something lose or something gives something a few clicks or whatever the case may be, and you're not 100% confident on your sighting.

Fair call on the targets - this would certainly help on sighting / checking and they don't take up much room - the adhesive ones would be OK as you could stick them to a box or between a couple of target sticks easily. I'll add them to the list
Thanks

If you're expanding to hunting/camping trips as well some fire starters, a little hot plate and billy, matches/lighter

Sleeping kit obviously.

This could turn into a huge list pretty quick ;)

True.

will try to keep it shooting focused as opposed to the other side line activities (like feeding yourself etc) or it being an emergency kit.

I thing that sunscreen and bug spray should also be included in both kits

Don't think there's a spotting scope on the list yet.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

The range only list to date is as follows:
small cleaning kit (three piece rod, bore snake, oil, cleaning cloth, brushes)
room for ammo / ammo boxes
Small first aid kit
leatherman multitool
small tool kit - screwdrivers, hammer, allen keys etc
gun / scope specific tools
pen / note book
Ear muffs (and spare batteries), ear plugs
Safety / shooting glasses
hat / cap
Small LED torch
hand held magnifying glass
string / cable ties / tape / super glue?
hand cleaner, tissues etc
Bug spray, sun screen
targets & patch tape
Camera / GoPro
Wind indicators
Spotting scope / Binoculars
Breach safety flags
spent brass bag

Thanks for the input guys. I will now go source an appropriate bag. I have seen some dedicated "range bags" which seem more to be focused on IPSC / action pistol shooting (room for +2 guns, mags and plenty of ammo. Seen a couple of carry bags in surplus stores that would suffice and also some plastic tool boxes and canvas tool bags at Bunnings that would also fit the bill.

Any input from members as to what works in this regard?

Have a look into some of the 'shooting mat' bags.

With the amount of flaps/folds and storage sections you can shoehorn a tonne of stuff into some of them.

Bottle of water.

I always forget and feel like s**t after a day at the range from dehydration.
Dear Santa,
Please bring me a Desert Tactical Arms SRS-A1 Rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum.
I'll be good with it, I promise!
