MDT TAC21 for Remington 700

Post by meek » 29 Oct 2013, 8:01 am

Hi guys,

I'm after some feedback on the MDT TAC21 chassis for the remington 700.

Watched the video on the MDT website and it sounds like watching a trailer for a Hollywood action movie

Some first hand feedback without all the marketing BS would be good :D

Very Tacticool.

How many picatinny rails do you really need though

Beechy is the man to speak to, he's got Rem 700 with the TAC21 chassis and a few other mods.

So did you buy one?

I have been researching stocks for rem 700 actions for about 6 months now. I'm in the process of building a custom rifle for 1,000m shooting.

I just purchased a second hand Christensen Arms Co hunter in .308. (Fired 50 shots!) It is basically mint! Fitted with a 6.5-20x50 Ziess.

Now it seems a shame to pay $$$$ and then strip it. For anyone not familiar with the rifle,,,,, it's light. Stupid light. Bare rifle recoil is just Ridiculous off my matchbox....(need a bipod so I can hold the fore wood area and muzzle brake) Stainless action, Threaded carbon fibre wrapped barrel, Google it. It's sexy and I bought it for $800 less than my dealer sells the bare rifle. Too good a deal to let go!!!!!!

Now I am getting a TAC21. It just stands out as a winner on all levels against all others for my needs. It will be a field rifle, pigs dingoes, goats and deer. I often carry 2 firearms or compound/ rifle when pigging.

I had even started the process of importing another custom stock. My biggest dilemma now is what colour and safe room????? I will also be swapping the scope. My friend is upgrading his Nightforce on his 338 Lapua magnum. (That thing just,,,,,well its a cannon)

All up it will cost me just over $5000.

I haven't had hands on with the Tac 21 but I've shot a rem 700 in a MDT Lite chassis. It was very ergonomic. The guy who had it chose the lite over the 21 because he said to remove the bolt for cleaning you had to take the chassis apart for the 21 and it was more hassle than he wanted.

All in all I was happy with my experience with it

Yeah that is right. The bolt removal is a nightmare.

In QLD I'm more worried about passing the application for storing with bolt inserted for that reason. I use powdered graphite on my bolts. No oil or grease. So like my lever action I have a mark on my cleaning rod where the brush leaves the breech. I just slip the brush in, screw it on and pull it out. Painful yes. But saves me dropping the lever etc. strikes me as a similar issue really.

What do you think?

I may be bias though, I'm in south east Queensland, dust is just something you live with out here. Lol. If we pass out when we see rain. They throw a bucket of dust on you to revive you.

They're a nice looking chassis that's for sure.

Not cheap though, right? About $700 or something for them?

Not yet :(

I started looking back in October but then had Christmas, a few family birthdays, the car had a melt down, all sorts of s**t went wrong

I'm pretty sold on one now though and expect I'll go ahead.

Just gotta save those funds...

This has been banned by NSWP..not even gonna comment on how stupid I think that is.

The stock has been banned?

Why? Because it's scary and black?

Just speculation here, but I'll think you'll find that that's exactly why it's banned.

They ban all scary looking things. Which have no affect on the way the rifle functions... At all...

Logic.

I have a 700 vsf in an MDT Lite chassis with magpul pistol grip and butt stock and I can't fault it. It's comfortable to shoot and carry and still looks the goods without 100 pic rails hanging of it. You know one for a red laser another for a green laser, don't forget one for a torch and most important another for a bayonet. :/

Not sure how old this post is, just joined today. I have a Remington Sendero in 7mm rm that I fitted with MDT TAC 21 chassis. I have to say, it was a simple straight forward assembly, nothing awkward or difficult about it. I installed a Timney tactical trigger at the same time, and a muzzle brake. Topped off with a 8X32 x58 NSX Nightforce scope. The gun shoots simply amazing and recoil is at that of a .243ish. Very easy on the shooter. An Atom industries Bipod and rear monopod makes for a very stable platform. I highly recommend the conversion.

Taking the bolt out takes maybe 10 seconds by the way. Slide one pin out of the stock, the stock slides off and bolt is free...

Hey Barocca,

I posted this months ago but still haven't got the the conversion. Too many other bills come up, you know how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback though, I'm still keen on it for once I eventually get around to it.

Re: MDT TAC21 for Remington 700

Post by Rod_outbak » 10 Dec 2014, 2:18 pm

I've had a (.308 win) Remington 700 VSSF fitted in a Tac-21 chassis for 2 years now. Magpul adjustable stock, and Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 scope on it.

I use it as my rifle on the property (Sheep & Cattle station near Longreach Qld).

It is heavy, and lots of metal. I kinda regret not getting a shorter barrel, rather than the 26" one on mine. However, I have a rifle that shoots superbly, which also doesnt give a s**t about piddly things like rain, etc. OR, even getting knocked around a bit in the vehicle.
(Mate also had a Rem 700 in a Tac-21 with a barrel that was only just longer than the chassis; VERY compact, and a lot more easy to put in and out of the car.)

I have a selection of AI mags; both 10 round and 5 round, in metal. For day to day prowling, the 5-round is great, as the 10-round is a bit on the bulky side, and sticks out a long way. However, I usually have a loaded 10-round mag in the ammo box, for when I encounter bulk hot pork. Occasionally, I've had need for both the 10-round mags, and there was a lot of dead hot pork afterwards...
I did get some of the plastic MDT mags the other day, and I'm not overly impressed. They dont seem to lock into the chassis anywhere near as solidly as the metal ones. However, I'll test them some more before I pass judgement. It might be because the heat up here is deforming them, though I'd have thought they were designed for a lot hotter than the mid 40's.

The crap about how difficult it is to clean/remove bolt is just pure baloney. I have spent more time removing the bolt from a SMLE than the time it takes to push the lock pin out to remove the whole buttstock. The latest version of the chassis has a slightly different setup on that pin, and it looks like it might be a better arrangement, but doesnt seem to able to be retro-fitted. Not a real concern, though.

I removed one of the short picatinny rails, and just kept one on the left side to mount my 1000-lumen Wolfeyes torch. Wolf-eyes have a neat hinged rail mount, which places the torch up beside the scope lens. It makes for a great cat-phukking light out to around 150 metres, if you have to leave the vehicle.
I have also fitted a Versa-pod spud under the front of the chassis, so I can install the bipod in a few seconds.

I call mine the Exploding Rabbit Gun, or ERG for short. It isnt the lightest, sexy(matter of opinion there..), or friendly looking rifle, but christ it can shoot.
[I do have a coulple of photos of it somewhere...]

At last count, the ERG currently holds a score of around 95 rabbits, 80 feral pigs, 35 cats, 1 dingo, 65 kangaroos, 1 fox, 1 crow, 15 feral bulls(9 from a helicopter), 11 sheep, and one Landcruiser, since I bought it in August 2012.
[Lets NOT talk about the Landcruiser....still a bit raw about that some 11 months on...]
And that score would be much higher if I hadn't been out of action for about 7 months this year(Blood Clot).

Some might think .308 is a little overkill for things like roos, rabbits and people's pet cats etc, but that is a load of crap. Reaching out and touching things at distance is a religious experience, and the .308 is very good at religion.
VERY satisfying.

I wanted a rugged chassis that would give me more distance-shooting options than I had with the .243 and .30-30. I never intended walking with it, I was more keen on something that would endure being knocked around a bit, and still shoot a long way accurately. Aside from wishing I had bought a shorter barrel on the rifle, the ERG is my go-to rifle for just about anything.

A Big thumbs up from me; for what I wanted anyway.

Cheers,

Rod.

I've stretched mine out to 500 but I think I rushed that group.

400m .75moa
300m .8moa(1floater).
200 .5moa easily.

That's my 1 only test at targets.

Since then I've carried it a lot and not shot it. Maybe this weekend. A mate will be out and he has a .338 lapua. My old fridge is just screaming out 1000m!
