Lokaway gun safes?

Post by Triang » 01 Nov 2013, 8:37 pm

Hi guys,

Anyone got a Lokaway gun safe?

I'd just be looking for a A/B category. I have two rifles but am looking at a 12-16 type size so I have a safe for the rest of the house valuables.

I see Lokaway have gone away from the traditional sliding rods security setup...

What do people think of the anti-pry door or whatever is it they call their system?

Anyone got one?

The anti-pry doors pretty clever I reckon.

Most sliding bar safes in that price range only have 4 bars or something, so you have to pry 4 points open to get into the safe.

With the lokaway you'd have to pry the entire length of the door out.

Not that I'm an expert safe cracker to point out flaws, but they feel solid as.

There are a couple of vids on YouTube of guys with pry bars opening a 'normal' sliding rod safe in 2-3 minutes by only having to open 3-4 points like mentioned above.

You'd be there much longer with one of the Lokaway ones I think.

Personally I think it's much the same either way at the entry level of gun safe.

It will stop thefts from random break ins or opportunistic thieves, but it someone comes prepared and intent on opening your safe they'll get in with time.

Do what you need to meet all the requirements and rest easy at that I think.

I've got one and it's perfectly solid IMO.

Was going to go with a Spika but stock was a problem.

No regrets about the Lokaway though.

Ive got one and it does feel a lot more solid than a friends entry level safe, the way the door locks in is good... but if someone wants in they will find a way!

That's the way with them all really.

Thinking of getting the lokaway 12-16 gun safe too, its a cat A and B but in QLD am I right in saying that ANY solid steel safe with a proper lock and bolted down to floor or frame is ok with a cat H gun?
says NOTHING about 6mm steel in the qld act or regulation
only NSW and Vic etc.

any thoughts guys ?

As you know there isn't an specified standard for every aspect of a firearms storage receptacle.

It will come down to an agreeable standard of "secure" for the whole safe, not just the walls and lock. External hinges, exposes welds, non-recessed door, general gaps that could be pried etc.

If an inspecting officer feels it doesn't constitute a "secure" receptacle for any of these or other reasons then you could get in hot water.

I would think an external padlock would be frowned up as a big pair of bolt cutters or $120 battery powered angle grinder would get through after not too long.

Convention safe design would either have internal hinges and opposing locking rods, or external hinges with locking rods on multiple sizes. Either way entry is protected from multiples side.

A safe using an external padlock is only as strong as one shackle.

I've had a lok4k for a while and it was great, i've recently moved and sold it and bought a lch1 so i don't have to bolt down here in vic, pretty decent entry to mid range safes i reckon

I'm pretty convinced with the Lokaway system.

Probably less of a benefit for higher end/security stuff but on basic safes I'm sure it'll hold up better than ones that just have a few locking rods on the opening side only.

I read this post and found it really helpful so I started ringing around only to find that whist everyone in Brisbane says they are a lokaway stockist people who ACTUALLY keep them in stock are few and far between. So I finally found a guy on the Southside who has a good range and motored on over. After checking them out - (he also has quite a few others there for comparison I decided on a LOK4CH but local guy was more than online stockists. I placed the order & paid only to wait and wait and wait. Many phone calls and promises I find out that the online guy has ZERO stock GGRRRR and he gets them shipped directly from Lokaway to my workplace and they dont have any... anyway I cancelled the order and went and picked one up from local guy after much frustration. Moral of my story online sometimes seems better but touching and feeling is better than online virtual. Oh interesting endnote there was a recall on the LOK4CH's that required a new part to be fitted which was done free of charge by local guy, if anyone has a LOK4CH ring lockaway and ask them about the faulty part, it was to do with the handle.

I'll pass that along to a mate with one.

Do you know was the fault a security issue or just a chance for the handle to break or something?
