Recommend a good rifle bolt oil?

Post by Fujix » 02 Nov 2013, 12:17 pm

Like it says fella,

I'm in need of a good oil for my rifle bolt.

It's well overdue for a full strip down and clean.

Only oil I have at the moment is for caring for the action, barrel etc. Not internals.

What's the deal?

You're right not to use that. Most maintenance oils will not work as bolt lubricant.

I actually use a high press axle grease for mine.

You want something thick for this.

Regular 'gun oil' will thin out or just pool where it isn't wanted.

It can gather some dust in it but that will come out with your regular cleaning (which you should start doing more often :P )

The really good thing with Frog Lube is it smells nice. Makes the workshop smell better after a good clean.

I use a very thin spread of moly grease on the lugs , cam and sliding surfaces.

I've used Castrol moly for a little while now. Does the trick.

Speak to your local mechanic or Bunnings guy or whatever and tell them you need a high impact grease.

Moly's a good start, they can show you what's available.

I've read a few people use truck axle grease like they connect a trailer to a big-rig truck with.

Going a bit overboard?
