Lockable Ammo Can

Post by scope » 08 Apr 2016, 11:55 pm

Hey everyone,

Tonight I decided to modify my ammo can so that it could be locked as well as remain waterproof/dustproof. This will be used to carry ammunition to the property / hunting trips.

What was needed;
Bolt + nut (I used a round head to maximize usable room)
Lock
O-Ring (This will act a seal)
Drill along will drill bit set
Spanner
Grinder
Vice
Marker

It's pretty straight forward.
Drill a hole, that's only a fraction bigger than the bolt size, into the ammo box that aligns with the existing external hole.
Insert bolt and test to see if the lid will shut, If it doesn't shut either make the external hole bigger or shorten the bolt.
Not required but I ground a flat spot on one side of the bolt to make it easier to drill into.
Measure out where the lock would need to be and mark accordingly.
Drill, starting with a small bit, gradually stepping it up until the lock fits through.
Insert bolt + nut into can with o-ring attached and test fit again. Tighten.

Keyring.
I used a .243 casing that I had from the last trip.
Drilled two holes opposing each other and inserted key ring.

I'm sure other people have done this or done this a better way. This is the way that popped into my mind, so I simply thought to share. Cheers.

Definately waterproof. The oring pushes against the body of the can and seals. Tested and confirmed.

Nice one.

I think I'll be turning one of my old cans into one.

bought a bracket yesterday to fit a standard sized ammo tin without damaging the tin. it fits right around the tin and you can put a lock on it. for those without skill in customizing :)

Had a similar thing until I dropped my can and buckled it beyond salvage. (empty at the time).

Got lazy and just bought a plastic one after

It's a good bit though.

sungazer wrote:Good Idea and work. I was in the LGS the other day and they were selling the empty cans like you have for $95 or something and about $950 full of ammo. anyway I asked the salesperson wouldn't these be better if they had some way of locking them to make them compliant. The response was well they sell pretty well. I could only say well maybe you could tell the rep they would be a lot more sort after both full and empty if they had a good looking locking device on them. duh

$95?????
I bought a bunch at Aussie disposals for 5bucks each....some time back...

I drill a hole in the flap, then simply padlock through the flap to the wire side handle...

Bought a 25mm cannon ammo can recently for very reasonable price.

$90+ buckeroos for an ammo can! Empty ammo can!? Your LGS is why my LGS is eBay.

On a totally random note, LGS. Lesbians, Gays and Shooters - the abused minorities. Only the LG have more rights now.

I don't believe that we have laws In Sa stating that we need to keep ammo locked in transit at the moment.

But for interstate travel I have one of these
