Where's the fox hat!

Post by bigfellascott » 27 Jul 2016, 9:43 pm

I knocked this up out of some left over fox skin I had laying around, I used a hat I already had and just added the skin where needed, all I can say it's beautiful to wear, lovely and warm without getting hot at all (perfect for where I live as it's often -6 or more through the day at times and comes in bloody handy when out spotlighting at night too, no need for muffs when wearing the little red dog on ya head.

Cheers fella's - I love wearing it out spotlighting and camping, nice a snug when she's on, even wear it in bed when camping and had the best nights sleep in ages. :D

Was easy to make really, didn't take long, I just cut the pieces to suit, stitched them on by hand whilst watching TV.

How did you tan the skin?

I had a tanning kit laying around so put it to use - came up great too  You can use all manner of things to tan skins with, tea leaves, brains from the animal you shot, eggs too from memory, you name it you can pretty much use it to tan with. :D

Once it's tanned I just wash em in the washing machine (when the wifes not looking) :D let em dry out, then break the grain to soften them up (I use a wire fence to do that or any thing I can find really to will work, through some of the lube on it and done really.

I make this Roo Skin Sling when I was a kid, I don't think I tanned that one, I just salted it and let it dry out and eventually cut a sling out of it and I think I just worked it over a wire fence, been going strong for 35yrs or so now with no hair slippage etc and probably the most comfortable sling I've used, hardly notice you have a rifle onya.

Personally, I would've cut the head and legs off it :-)

I remember being at a pub once where there must have been a Hen's night going on as there were about 6 wasted girls wearing these:

(my girlfriend is the model :) )

Maybe we can pool our fox skins together and start a business making these!
