I would think you could make the stock from just about anything, you could carve it out of granite if you like. If I had the patience to work with carbon fibre I'd love to do one in balsa or polystyrene and wrap it in carbon.
Some timbers rot or attract insects so might need treating for that.
Some attract moisture so would either need to be dried and well sealed, or require lots of clearance between wood and metal to accommodate it.
Some are a fairly loose grain or "hairy" when cut which could detract from comfort.

I've been working on an aluminium bullpup chassis.

Jarrah would be fine, definitely long lasting.... though maybe a little heavy.

Blade racer, that's a niiiice looking setup, mate. I'd love to hear a bit more about it, perhaps worth a new thread?

I will do something like that when I get it finished.
The basic plan was something that just about anybody could build using readily-available materials with hand tools, and no lathe or welding.
That was the prototype proof of concept, primarily to confirm no loss of accuracy.
Very pleased with it, especially the way it handles, but there are some things I want to improve - the trigger though works astonishingly well.
That one is with the .204 but any Ruger American centrefire will fit the chassis.

Since I got the MDT LSS chassis I'm now looking at a bullpup using that as the basis, mainly due to it already being set up for AICS magazines.

yes amongst other timbers that are around. My personal favourite is red ironbark extremely stock but weighs a ton and hard on tools when making it.
