Aviator sunglasses as eye protection

Post by Michael64 » 25 Dec 2016, 12:22 am

G'day shooters,

I wear prescription glasses and have a pair of Aviator sunglasses (Ray-bans).

Will these provide sufficient protection when shooting at a range?

Will these be allowed to use as protection at Little River SSAA Shooting Range?

Thanks guys

I also have generic glasses, are these under the same safety regulations if the sunnies are too dark?

You don't need eye protection unless your under 18 i though, i haven't been to public ssaa range in a while but i reckon you'd here about it if they went all safety sam on everyone

Just go and enjoy :) theres no semi's around to worry about, you'd havd to be looking at ejection port to eject brass into your eye lol

I believe eye protection is mandatory at all SSAA ranges. They were recently audited by the nanny police and it became a requirement

Most modern eye glasses have polycarbonate lenses sáme as safety glasses. Check you have a ray bans with poly carbonate lenses.

I just did a quick Google on Ray Band Aviators and couldn't find anything about them being considered "safety glasses"

Untill someone questions how much protection your Aviators provide, I'd just keep wearing them.

Yep. That's correct for Eagle Park Little River.

Not correct, sorry. Under the Australian Standard Sun glasses are only required to provide about half the impact resistance of standard safety glasses. Often not polycarbonate. No matter the cost. Prescription glasses are the same. The US standard has a slightly higher level of impact resistance. They are often sold as shooting glasses here. But the additional cost is difficult to justify as the improvement is small. You can buy a reasonable pair of safety glasses for $15. And yes safety glasses are always polycarbonate, usually about 1.2mm thick. 1 mm of polycarbonate provides 99% UV protection.
By the way this area is an honesty system and hardly policed. So often imports are not made to the standard. But safety shops are normally careful to only sell glasses to the standard.

Edit note: I doubt if most of the range officers would know the difference or how to check.

I believe its worded as 'must wear eye protection'. Meaning glasses of any sort will suffice. As long as you have something covering your eyes I find it very unlikely you would be questioned or harassed in regards to your choice of eyewear. I generally find most RO's are pretty good guys and are just there to make sure everyone is safe and has fun. Not break your balls over what safety rating your eyewear has.

Ray ban Aviators are nice glasses... very cool, but if they ARE ray bans, then theyre glass, NOT polycarb....so I wouldnt consider them shooting glasses, although they do have a 'Shooting' style, I don't think theyre necessaily safety glasses either....... use something else

$20 at Bunnings will get you some good safety glasses.

If you want prescription safety glasses then this guy here in Adelaide seems to have a very good reputation for quality and service.

That's my understanding too.

My earlier post is just saying, don't count on much protection from sunnies. Most are way under the safety glasses standard. I could get into the technicalities but there would be little point.

Correct. Even $10 safety glasses provide better impact protection than sunnies.

as long as morons keep blowing up their bolt rifles the safety creep will continue, as with most PPE rules it's about protecting your vision in a catastrophic failure not from an every day event
