I knew that damn "show is your knives"/ knife making thread would lead me astray and I still bloody read it anyway - you blokes have a lot to answer for!
Here's some stuff I've been messing with;
The stock cover is for Lady Noisy's .45-70 (Pedersoli) Sharps which is a bit low in the comb when the vernier sights are raised to 600 yards. If she beats me with it on I'll be removing it  The Ammo pouch and cap box are wet molded. The cap box was a fiddly sodding thing. I'll make a US civil war cartridge pouch to go with it.
Gotta say though that wet moulding leather is so cool!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Maybe. Depends how adventurous the project is. I haven't been playing this game long and I'm sure an expert would pick lots of faults.

I spent 4/5ths of stuff all on tools. You can find them on ebay. Most of my tools I made such as edge burnishing wheels that go in a cordless drill, stitching hole punches in 4 and 5 per inch. My belt grinder is home made of course and VERY useful for thinning leather and evening the edges. Belt grinders are a tool you never knew you needed till you've got one!
Got my leather from a Melbourne supplier (also ebay) but will find a better outlet. The first sheet was 1300 x 750 of fairly stiff grained veg tanned for $76 delivered. Don't know if that's dear or not but I've had a heap of fun out of it and only used half of it. Rivets and press studs from the local disposals shop and saddle shop (actually they stock a lot of bits and pieces).
I reckon had I paid someone to for the stuff I've made it would certainly have cost significantly more than I've out laid so far and I'm having the fun of diy and learning new skills.

Thanks for that ND, I too enjoy making my own stuff - more satisfying to me doing so. Will have to have a bit of a look into this leather making game as I have a few knives that need sheaths and I'd like to make my own, nothing there looks real hard to do, just need the right tools and a bit of info to get going by the looks of it and there's plenty of that available if you look around.

cheers mate and nice job on your leather work.

No matter how good you are, somewhere, somehow there's always someone better than you ready to critique, lol.

I really like that buttstock cover, been looking for one for my Marlin 1894.

Couple of saddles I made back when I was working with horses. Made the first one when I was 17, second one when I was 23. Both fully handmade and stitched. I had spent time with an old-time saddler when I was 14-16 and learned basic skills from him. The other pic is of the Hondo on the end of a braided rawhide Reata ( Lasso) I also made when I was 17. Made that from the hide of a wild bull that was shot on a property near Bombala (NSW).

We fitted the comb raiser/ cover and headed down to the range paddock to smack plough discs and LN says the rifle fits her way better and feels much more secure and easier to maintain a steady sight picture. This may turn out to be a bad idea come Comp season lol.

So old thread but thought Id show off what I have been doing. Obviously NOT professional.
A while ago Gwion was good enough to gave me one of his knives to test. So far Ive only scalped a couple of foxes, skun 1 rabbit and cut a few small branches with it off a sapling to create a hide. It looks like its going to be a great knife with terrific edge holding ability. So to save my fingers and look after it I decided it deserved a sheath.
Got some leather from the local tannery (very cheap at $11 for about 1/2 q sq meter.
here is a few pics in stages and final product, Not fantastic but happy with it as its my second go at leather work. The first was 25 yrs ago.

That’s the go! If you have a belt sander you can use that smooth of the edges level and even. Break the corners a little too. Once that’s done find a smooth tool with a little concave face on it. Wet the edge with spit and use the tool you found to rub the edges slick and smooth. This helps the appearance heaps.

Yep, plan on just using a cork block and sand paper. Then some neats foot oil.

Looks good oldbloke I would hold back on the neatsfoot oil for that leather and just use some Jayell saddle cream/wax forgot what it called. I think the tool Noisydad is refereeing to is a edge beveler. just puts a 45 deg angle or something similar on the edge of the leather.

I don't have one of those tools. And maybe Dubbin instead of meats foot oil?

One of my most effective edge slickers is the DVD remote that has a rather nice finger groove in the back. The groove in the handle of those Ebay tools also works. Saliva works as an edge moisture source very well.

Yes dubbin is very similar to the Leather wax/oils It probably gives a bit of a more durable finish. I really can only just make out a small difference between them with the dubbin being a bit more solid. The Neatsfoot would give it a too oily finish and may make it too soft flexible. Neatsfoot great for old dried out leather that you want to rejuvenate.

Nice one OB.
As Noisy says, the concave on one of you awls will work fine to smooth your edges.
Glad to see the knife is working as intended!
