Help, with couple of large skinning knives.

G'Day Fella's,

I was recently given Two large skinning knives to look at.
The history of these knives is unknown, and the only distinguishing makes, is JG over a C inside a Diamond, stamped into the blade.

I have found a Bladesmith in Sth Africa JG Custom but apart from this, these knives are a bit of a mystery.
Any of you blokes have any ideas?

Don't really understand the question.
I highly doubt these knives are made by the same JG Custom in Sth Africa; a quick google showed his style of knife making as VASTLY different to these and no diamond brand stamp on them..

I think you have a task ahead of you. Tracking down that brand with no reference to time period or place of manufacture or even who first owned them is going to be a very slim prospect.

Craftsmen usually have a particular style, even if specialist custom projects are ordered, there will be something about each piece that kind of says "i made this". None of the blades in the links shown so far (including the JG Custom from Sth Africa that i searched the other day) look remotely like these knives.

The handles also suggest some age due to the shape and finish but this could be an emulation rather than indicative of true time period.
The fact that the edges are hand honed may suggest age but seeing the brand is hand stamped in with a chisel and individual letter stamps suggests a rather amateur approach.
The sheath is not much help as it is a very generic design and does not look original. If it is original it is not very old or if it is, not well used because that lacing looks quite pristine.

So, in short, they are made by either a keen hobbiest or some time in the more distant past. Either way, finding the maker will not be easy and i'm guessing there will not be too many of them around for a random internet user to pop up and say, "oh yeah, grand dad had one of those and said it was made in..........".

Sorry to be a downer but that's just how i see it.

Sister pair!

So I thought I’d do a bit of research on a pair of knives that were gifted to me through my uncle from my grandfather.
Now I’ve had these for years well over 2 decades.
Last time I dug around I didn’t find a single thing but now!
I see you have the sister pair to the knives I have.
I can confirm that these are ivory handles knives. I have wondered and wondered about them over the years and seeing your post via a google search put a very big smile on my face.
As I’m aware these are the only knives made by J G C.
Being ivory handled I’d love to know the value, but would imagine they would be worth a lot. My uncle said After he gave them to me that they were very valuable and not just sentimental.
If you’d know the value I’d love to know.

Hi All

I acquired a pair of knives today from an advert on FB, somebody who was downscaling & amongst the items these knives. Apparently they had passed down a couple of generations which correlates to the other stories regarding the JGC knives above. I was also intrigued as to who the maker was so starting searching & came across these posts. Mine are slightly different from the others, more ebony on the handle with what I’m assuming from the other posts are ivory inlays. Very excited to have come across this post & seen that there are more like this out there & people trying to identify this maker. Did anyone have any luck finding out more if the history of these knives?

JGC knives come from South America , Brazil I think . Yeah a place called Conceição dos Ouros. @jgccutelaria , bare with me I'm interpreting Brazilian.
