Cleaning Kits

Post by mar6874 » 13 May 2017, 6:26 pm

Hi all,

I'm now in the process of owning my own first rifles. I've opted for the Howa 1500 in .223 and the Ruger American .22 to start of with and I'm wondering if you all have any recommendations for cleaning kits?
I thought I had the .223 covered as I trawled through my old kit box from the army but seems I gave away my all singing and dancing kit when I got out! There's a lot on the market so kits and suppliers would be most welcomed.

Thanks in advance

I suggest you just buy separate components and build your own 'kit'.

A good one piece cleaning rod and a few brushes, a bottle of Sweets, a bottle of Hoppes and a roll of patch cloth. I use a nylon brush as a patch jag.

For the centrefire especially, you will need bronze brushes to deal with the carbon deposit in the bore. After 200 rounds it might need J B Bore Compound. This is my experience. Others will disagree. Some will tell you not to clean at all.
Good Luck :)

Don't bother.
Get a one-piece rod with a ball bearing handle.
A jag, a nylon brush and perhaps a mop.
A roll of 2x4" patch material.
A spray can of a combination solvent/oil.
A tube of gun grease.
Grab an MTM box with the V pieces to support the rifle and house your cleaning gear.

What G said, just get it all individually, stay away from the screw in rods as they bend and scrape the barrel only need a few bits and peices, i have a rod and fishing tackle box 2 rifle rods .22 centrefire ( for cleaning .22 rimfire ) and a 30 cal rod, a 12g rod along my with shotgun and rifle tackle boxes with nick nacks in it, you'll develop your own habits/methods most likely

Include a no trace jag and some nylon brushes so you don't get false copper readings.

Stainless Steel Rod (1pc)
Brushes (Nylon, Bronze)
Jag
Solvent (copper and Powder)
Patches
Lanox (for protecting against rust)
Grease for your bolt lugs

That's about all you need to clean and protect your firearms.

Just Google for a video on what you want to know. The information on the net is astounding. Without it I'd still be fumbling in the dark on so many areas of reloading. Mind you you will still find that opinions on many shooting topics do vary.
