Wanted Lead Shot (or something)

Post by p3seven » 14 Jun 2017, 11:00 am

I have a gun rest which is hollow plastic. Instructions say to fill the hollow spaces with lead shot. Lead shot seems as rare as honest politicians.

Does anyone have 10 kg of unwanted small sized shot they are willing to sell or donate. I am in Canberra at the moment so, a 300 k circle would be ok for me to travel for pickup. Or, l can pay postage.

Other options may be sandblasting sand or shot. (De J your comment on suitability may help)

I am open to suggestions.

Rebelgunworks has shot listed.
https://www.rebelgunworks.com.au/collections/wads

Or you could get some sheet from Bunnings and cut it up if the voids aren't too small.
https://www.bunnings.com.au/consolidated-alloys-600-x-600mm-x-15kg-acryflash-lead-squares_p1122140

Or borrow a metal detector and visit a shotgun or smallbore range.
I pulled 2.7kg of bullets out of my butt last week, I now have 7.5kg of recovered bullets ready to turn into slugs.

What a waste. Use sand and shoot off the shot.

I have an MTM one that works pretty well, although I prefer to use Caldwell bags.

Thanks "Chronos" ... Now I don't know if I should laugh and/or cry.

Looks like a "Kids Toy" ... but I'd say it is probably meant to be serious... For a .22LR maybe.

It suits me. l used it to shoot my first 50 m IRB at Ripley. Scored 211.3 with my Savage Mk ll 22 lr varmint. It has improved my load development for the 243 W by at least 0.5 MOA over a bipod.

Not legal for Bench rest comp. But, for $77 who cares. The weight will make a lot of difference as it moves and needs readjusting after every shot with the 243. To buy shot at $91 for 10 kg makes it nearly as costly as buying a Caldwell setup.

Did I say sand? And use the lead shot for rabbits & foxes.

"Might be a stupid idea but rapid set concrete?" Not stupid, but sand will be about same weight.

You could use crushed garnet bead blasting grit, 10kg bucket at Supercheap for about $25, it's what I use to fill my bags with and is a tad cheaper than lead shot

What's it like when it gets wet?
Does it solidify into a big lump that you need to break up?
Going into town this arvo so I might grab some myself.

Hi Pete,
A couple of suggestions,,,,,,,

1) A bit expensive but ideal size wise,, would be to use air gun pellets.

2) You could get plain scrap lead in any form, and make your own shot the old fashioned way.

ie: Melt the lead and pour it through an air space into a tub or swimming pool of water.
The higher you can pour it from,,, the finer the shot.

3) Or, if you want to use sand,,,,,,,, granite sand is damm heavy.
I've got a pit in one of my paddocks that is pure granite sand, and is perfect size for mortar or concrete.
It is what was used here to build the house, and seems to be an endless supply, straight out of the pit.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Specific gravity of materials discussed.
Lead. 11
Garnet. 4.1
Quartz sand. 2.75
Cement. 3.1
Granat. 2.3

The finer the grains the more weight too.
Lead is obviously the best. But sand and cement are bloody cheap.

I would just try sand, but not from the beach as there is a lot of much lighter shell grit.

I bought Nortons Grit. Garnet grit was availablle as well but, the 10 kg bucket was twice the size of the 10 kg Norton grit. I said to the assistant "l'll take this one it is denser". He said "but they are both the same weight". Another level of denseness entered the equation. The Norton grit is $20 cheaper than Garnet.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I grabbed one of these when I was in town, haven't tried it yet though.

What does Caldwell fill their bags with?
One of my rears came filled but has a label warning about it containing chemicals that cause cancer, luckily only in California though. Unfortunately it covers where they mention what it's filled with - some sort of ground media I think?
