Cleaning rod caliber

Post by 308cool » 16 Jun 2017, 3:25 pm

Hi,
I was just wondering about what caliber I should get a cleaning rod in. I have a .22lr and 25-06 and want to try and get one rod for both guns. At the moment, for the cleaning rod I'm after, I can only find it in .22 cal (which I think will be to big for the .22lr) and .17 cal. Its a stainless rod so will it bend too much in the large 25-06 barrel? Also what size nylon brush and jag would you recommend for the .22lr? 20 cal? 22 cal?
Cheers

Standard .22 rod will do everything from .22lr and above.

Jags, brushes etc come in standard sizes. .22 cal, 6mm, 6.5, 7mm, .30cal and so on.

For anything smaller than .22, such as .204 and .17 use a .17 rod.

Some of the 22 cal coated rods however wont do a .22LR. I use a dewy 22 cal stainless for my 22lr and 243. In the 243 it is ok and still hard to clean having to use such small patches. I use the Parker Hale type jag roll the patch on like a cigy paper or wrap a patch around a 22cal nylon brush.

Cheers for the responses. I have also heard mixed responses on wether a .22 cal rod will do a .22lr. The rod I'm specifically looking at is the proshot coated stainless rod.

FWIW, if your 22 is a CZ there is every chance that only a 0.20" rod will fit properly. That has been the case with both of mine.

Proshot do .17 .20 .22 and .27 + rods from memory.

.27 too big for your 25-06 of course.

If in doubt about the .22 size get somewhere to order you a .20 and you could use it for both.

They're just in a plastic tube with a cap in the shop, would be no hassle to open one and run it down a 22lr from the shop shelf to check.
