Bargain priced hunting knife.

Post by Oldbloke » 22 Jul 2017, 8:48 pm

So, I was in Anaconda today. Sheath knife $22. Normally $45. So I took a punt and got one for myself and one for son-in-law .

Carbon steel with a wooden handle 4" blade.
Rockwell hardness claimed to be 59. Naturally made in China at that price.

Seems good value for a basic hunting knife.

Question. Would HRC of 59 be OK for general hunting knife?

PS. I need a new knife like I need a hole in the head. Must have 6 or 7. Just couldn't help myself. :D

Rockwell hardness 58 -62 is ideal for hunting knife application too hard for survival type heavy abuse type stuff though, so it should retain the edge really well ,i agree oldbloke knives are like guns no matter how many you have , you always need one more , got another opinel last week , these are my favorite to take out hunting , cheap , light, easy to sharpen ,razor sharp , been around since 1890,these things have stood the test of time , anyway oldbloke lets hope you skin plenty with your new knife

I've got a couple of custom hunters but my go to is a $20 chinese no name folder. Easy to get shaving sharp, holds a reasonable edge and I am not going to loose any sleep if I lose it.

Hardness is just one factor in what makes a good knife and HRC 59 is pretty high but achievable with high carbon steel. How it maintains its cutting edge will depend on you.

Problem may be chipping of the edge and corrosion that comes with carbon steels but nothing that can't be managed with careful edge maintenance and washing and oiling it after use.

Yeh. I have already given it the lanox treatment. And as bent arrow said, if I loose it not a big deal.

Gave it 1 minute strop on the steel and it's sharp as.

Hardness Is not everything. Chipping won't be an issue though, if you keep use to hunting. Not going to chip on deer skin. Possibly while boning out but I doubt you will be using it for a full carcass break down.
Only issue with a hard edge is that while it will keep sharp longer it is also difficult to reset the edge by hand when needed.

Just a few strops on a steel and it had an edge as good as my puma pal.
Seems to be fantastic value for anyone looking for a cheap hunting knife. I guess only time will tell.
Gonna give my kershaw folder a rest for a few months. Give it a work out with luck.

Look pretty solid with the wooden handle.

That's where the cheapies have always buggered up for me, handle falls apart.

Just a follow up. Not a great test but have cleaned 5 rabbits with it now and I'm impressed. Still razor sharp. If your just starting out and after a cheap hunting knife you can't go wrong for $22. It's was for that price again last week so must be a regular thing.

Looks good to me.

Plenty of knifes starting at $150 that would only do the same thing. Other double that, leaves me scratching my head what you're paying for :unknown:

Or how much some makers are ripping off us.
Is not SS, probably some sort of spring/high carbon steel. Handle is "zebra" wood. Not a soft wood, fairly hard. And made in China so production line & labour is cheap as. Were $22 again last week. Seems fantastic value.

I personally prefer spring/high carbon steel to SS, your knife is fantastic value
