Outfitting a safe.

I upgraded my storage arrangements to a nice old half ton box. It comes empty and needs to be set up for the gun accommodation. I am thinking of carpeting the floor, walls and shelves as well as building a rack that can accommodate up to 10 long guns. I am not looking to be able to squeeze in there as much as possible.

The dimensions approximately 750 by 700 and about 1.5 meter high.

Any advice of materials for the carpeting and ideas of rack build?

I'd look at using the existing mounting system on the sides and hanging some timber with barrel cutouts on that. Personally I reckon natural fibers would be the way to go.

Safes are funny to buy. They could be had for nothing at all when owners just want them gone to many thousands of dollars when you need them now and shop retail.

This one I got for $700 plus around $130 in track rental to get it home. I think I overpaid a little.



This Grade 7 1.5 ton safe was had for the same money. Apparently safes of these caliber no longer being imported to Australia. Nearest equivalent to it now goes for $15K retail.

Yes. Those rails could be moved up and down and the timber U shaped frame could be wedged in between on top of them. Finishing barrel cutouts with evenly and finely could be a bit of a challenge to me. It would look great oil sealed on gray carpeting. Something like that?

You could source a timber winerack and use sections of that. The ebay magnetic strip ones are the easiest option though.

Sounds like a good buy to me mate.

e.g. the 150kg Spika I know is $990. Other brands for similar weight are on par.

A 500kg real deal box for $830 is a win in my book.

I used rubber backed "pool carpet" in the bottom of mine.
It is so nice and spongey,, it is great cos the butts settle in and don't slip or slide.

Also, when you make racks for the barrels to locate into, make sure they are out from the walls far enough, to accommodate the scopes below.

I am thinking of using carpet tiles and stick them to the walls using double sided carpet tape. Really hard sticking stuff.

Do I have to use a locked compartment if I keep the ammo in the same box as rifles? I know, I do.

Marine carpet liner is the only material to use. This can be glued in place and do not forget moisture absorbers for the safe. A great buy.

I figured I wouldn't want to overcrowd the safe and opted for a 6 long guns setup. Lots of space inside, easy to maneuver.

Got hold of a similar safe a while back. Went for a quick, temporary fix that I never seem to get around to finishing. Double stacking works and gives plenty of room. Just put least used rifles at the back. This system allows for 16 rifles in mine,mostly lever guns that get frequent use. Gave me more room in the commercial gun-safes for my scoped rifles.

Very practical indeed. It does occupy quite a bit pf internal space so even a single addition to the rifle collection would require a rebult or rather rethink f everything.

Got the self sticking carpet in the mail and 4 hours later the job is done.

Well, I am quite happy with the outcomes. The quality of these carpet tiles is outstanding and the glue is mighty tough. Although with some persuasion the tiles could be removed. The self adhesiveness makes the work so easy and enjoyable with the final results presenting like a commercial product. Well and truly impressed. For $60 I got enough material to cover every single surface of my safe and I got just over half in left overs.

If anyone interested in leftovers let me know.

These are indeed documents safes from 60s and 70s. They don't have cash rating and with some angle grinder and crowbar sure could be popped open, but compared to the modern regular commercial gun safes still offer superior protection. They are about 450-500 kg heavy and locking with three or four proper one inch steel bolts. These meet and exceed all government expectations for safekeeping of firearms. Again, no match for the 1-1.5 ton bank safes like Gamerancher's above, but much easier to handle and move around if necessary.
Majority of the commercial gunsafes don't offer real protection and safety. They could be opened in the matter of minutes.

Stops the oil from running back into the chamber, mag. well and stock etc?
