Suggestions for a New 150+kg safe?

Post by TBJ » 18 Sep 2017, 6:18 pm

I'm looking at getting a new safe, and as as I don't want to bolt it down it needs to be more than 150kgs as per VIC law, I'd also like it to hold 15+ guns, also I have seen some in the US that have power to them for dehumidifiers and lights so that would probably be a nice addition to have (saves putting the dehumidifier in the oven every couple of weeks) if any aussie gun safe has this feature, what would you suggest I was looking at the Lokaway LCH1 but haven't seen one in person so don't know if they're any good
thanks

I have a lokaway lch1, pretty happy with it, big and awkward to move, and if you have really long guns ( 1.3 m or more ) you'll struggle i had to take out my little shelf to fit some in but oh well, decent ammo capacity and comes with a plate to hold more guns on the door, which was removed pretty quickly

Go see your local locksmith. They are always pulling out old bank safes. The catch is they usually weigh over a tonne. But you get something that will never be broken into and possibly fireproof for around the same price

I thought that rack on the door looked useful, I guess not

That sounds like a decent idea, the only issue im not sure about moving and the floor holding such a weight

What about lighting and getting power into the safe? How do people do it?
thanks

Lighting and power arent really needed for most safes. Can get battery sensir lights to put inside that will turn on as you open the door.

For thay size safe look at it being fire rated. Look at lokaway, trophy, spika etc

The door thing was useless to me, but your experience may differ, i put a peice of paracord width ways and use it to store my cleaning rods and a bayonet, very handy place.

For lighting i went to jaycar and got two battery sensor lights as mitch suggested, there are pre drilled holes at the bottom where bolts go through that you could sneak wires up, otherwise just get the drill out

I have a 14 gun "sentry safe" which i picked up used for $600 and am very happy with.It comes in over 200kg.

After i bought it though i did come across an equipment safe, made for sensitive computer data storage so it had bus to run cables in.Was very cheap and very heavy, might be worth a look.

At the 150kg+ level in any decent brand the quality seems all about the same to me.

Not always the case for the cheaper/lighter ones, but once you reach that weight the quality seems to all reach the same bar, more or less.

Spika, Lokaway, Browning. All much of a muchness.

With mine, I just drilled (where I wanted to) and fitted suitable grommets for electrical safety,,,,, then fed cable thru to the interior.
(The tiny size hole needed doesn't adversely affect any fire rating,, especially if plugged with Hi Temp silcone or similar)
Once inside the cable was secured out of sight and behind the carpet lining.

The light itself is a fluoro that is fractionally narrower than the entire internal safe width,, and mounted to the underside of the full width ammo safe above.
It has an inbuilt movement sensor that turns the light on when the door is opened, and goes off after 45 seconds of non movement.

Being mounted up where it is, it lights up the entire safe interior,,, whilst the light body itself is not visible unless you are a dwarf and looking upwards.

This light is called an "under sink cupboard light",,,, is 240v,,,,,, and I purchased it from "Cunnings"

Not sure whether they are still available or not,,,,,, but maybe worth your looking for one.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

I have a couple of LCH2's amongst others, I drilled a hole on the back and fitted a 12v socket Jaycar Part No.PS0522 and wired up some 12v LED lights on the inside. Add a 2A 12DC plug pack and lighting problem solved, I leave the lights on permanently as the little heat they generate helps prevent condensation and rust. For the door on 1 I removed the rack and fitted a large sized Spika safe door organiser.
