Transporting guns with a ute..

Post by Kenny » 16 Oct 2017, 7:14 pm

Hey guys,

Looking for the best way of transporting guns with my ute.
Saw a post here from a few years back getting a tool box from bunnings. For me, to get the right length then I'll lose too much of my tub space, as they get too wide to fit all my other stuff.. Also leaving dead space around the wheel arc. The next problems is when using different tonneau covers.. I looked at getting a custom built tool box dressing in the wheel arc - which is good as it leaves more tub space open, but also costly..

The law says to keep them out of sight in a lockable compartment.. Have any of you guys any experience with using a drawer system like this:

Not sure if this would be strong enough for storage..

Any thoughts?

A mate took his seats out and installed a lockable box . Put his seats back and can fit his 30/30 and .22 magnum in. Just has to fold a seat forward to access. :drinks:

Ps that was a 98 hilux.

Yeah, I've seen tradies with the drawer system under their tray for tools. Great way, can even hide it behind the number plate..
Unfortunately for me, I've a Hilux with a standard tub, so no way of having drawers under..

Under the seat is good, with the Hilux the seats folds up easily..
I'm being difficult again.. 3 child seats strapped in keep that seat firmly down... :)

Behind the seat, or on back seat but covered with blanket or tarp. Out of sight out of mind.

Its a dual cab Wombat.

For those who don't have child seats strapped in, then I reckon behind/under the back seat is the best option.
Well hidden, and can create a lock to it as well. I need to be a bit more creative as I can't access the seats..

Sorry I missed that you were the one with baby seats.
Easiest option would be a toolbox in the tray, fasten it with captive nuts in the tray or chain it down to solid points so you can quickly remove it for full tray use.

He is in Victoria so on back seat and out of sight is OK. Just add trigger lock. That's what normally I do. Some times behind the seat in the Triton.

I just use a tool box with a quick release bolt setup in it in my ute if I have to travel and stay over type thing, simple and it's quick to remove when I don't need it in there. :unknown:

I've made up a couple of these out of 12mm plywood. One has holders built in for my scoped competition rifles and the other one is just a box that I put bagged rifles in. I use an 8mm steel cable to run through the handles and locks and secure to the vehicle. They are strong enough to load sh!t on top of if space is at a premium. I travel a lot for shooting and they pass the " locked in container and secured to the vehicle " requirements that a few states have. I have just returned from a trip to Tassie and traveled with three scoped and three lever guns in the one box, all in padded rifle bags. Dimensions are 300 x 300 x 1200mm.

I have replaced the locks in the photo with hasp and staple type for use with padlocks.

Is the floor in the back (between front and back seats ) flat? Maybe something to go in there? Kids can put their feet on it

I have that exact same Titan drawer system in my Ranger. Works perfectly for me, very robust & strong.
It will take my seven rifles comfortably and the locks are very strong.

Henry .22WMR Lever
Ruger American .17HMR
Fabarm Gamma Lux 32" 12g O/U
1945 Lithgow SMLE .303

Mate, it is raised in the middle, but that could be built in to the box..
Not a bad place to put it, put the floor mat on top - and out of sight..

I have an under tray toolbox/drawer on a dual cab the drawer is only just long enough for a rifle so not the best. Also have lockable side toolboxes so i can store ammo in one of those.

I've got a lockable canopy. Put them in lockable case that is chained and padlocked to the tie down points in the tub for longer trips.
Short trips without backseat passengers, bag on the backseat with a blanket chucked over.

Yeah, I'm in the market for a canopy myself.. tint the windows as dark as I can.
Had a short trip today, so just covered them up on the floor behind me..
It is the longer trips and when camping, that I want them locked up and out of the way..

I have an extracab and just put it in the back of the cab in a case under a blanket and under my clothing bag, backpack, sleeping bag and boots etc.
Ammo goes in the tray in a locked cargo case with my camping gear.

I've thought about tinting my windows but day to day in my situation I think it would invite trouble, I have had mine broken into twice off street parking and now leave all glove boxes/consoles open and empty swapped out the ashtray and mounted the CB there.
Even still I have found my tonneau cover unstrapped from people peeking in, I am so tempted to booby trap my tray with a cobra.
