Shooting mat

Has anyone invested in a "proper" shooting mat?

Did you think there was anything to it or are you just as well off throwing down a towel?

Not a proper shooting mat but I use a gonk mat from Platatac.

It's only for the upper body or for sitting on.

I use my swag when I want to shoot prone for plinking in the paddock. On the few occasions I shoot at the local range, I take a heavy blanket so I'm not lying direct on the concrete

There are a few different standard models if you like. Those for target Rifle where a rear rest is not used. (No cut out at front of mat) and those for rested rifles that have a cut out so you can place your rest or bags plates. ect directly on the ground. They have two handles and 4 sections from memory so when you pick them up by the handles they fold into a one section size and can carry some stuff in the fold to and from shooting spot. Also if you want something custom made no problems.

So it doesn't sound like it folds up into a nice handy pack you can hang off your belt or strap to your pack?

I prefer a picnic blanket or a small canvas tarp rather than something padded. Mainly because they don't allow the rear bag to move up and down.

I just lay on the ground - to me it’s more crap that really isn’t needed 99% of the time. Any blanket or tarp will do the same for little or no cost.

I have a picnic rug just for that. But I've been known for my ability to give negative f***s. It's ok, the rug, but it's blue with squares and s**t. Like if I didn't have a gun , just lied on it randomly, I think, people would make fun of me. So, obviously, the mat has to meet at least minimal levels of tacticoolness. :)

That said, I do have a very tacticool range bag, but I like bags :)

Mmmmm, "comfortable" isn't a particularly assertive term? :?

If you're going to be lying down on the ground for an extended period of time, a shooting mat with padding makes a lot of sense.
You won't shoot well if you are uncomfortable. I shoot long range black powder cartridge rifles off cross-sticks from a prone position and anywhere up to 80+ shots in a day at some matches. I sure as sh!t don't want to tough it out without a "proper" shooting mat.
A mat serves two purposes, 1, it provides padding and comfort and 2, it keeps you and your gear away from the crap on the ground.
It can be anything from a simple high density foam camping mat to a purpose built shooting mat. Whatever floats your boat or is within range of your wallet.
