Cleaning Oils & Lubricants

Post by Diizane » 03 Jan 2018, 10:12 pm

I'm trying to find a good set of cleaning gear.

I've got a multi caliber kit for the tools and all that, now it's just the liquids i will be using.

What do you guys use to clean your bore and what lube do you use when cleaning? I feel like i'm pretty limited on choices at my local store.

Only shooting a 223 rifle at the moment.

I've been looking for G96 but it's not stocked by my local store and so i believe, can't be shipped due to it being an aerosol. Am i wrong here?

For centerfire i only ever use a quality single piece cleaning rod with ball bearing handle, i.e. the dewey rod thats caliber specific. Never use or tust a multipice cleaning rod, very easily damage the barrel. Using a parker hale style jag with clean cotton patches 1st use sweets 7.62 to remove copper fouling. Then follow up using hoppes #9 powder solvent, when pacthes come out clean then finish off with G96 to remove any remaining 7.62 and hoppes #9. As always be very careful to not allow any excess solvent to enter receiver and magazine areas, so carefull attention must be given to just the right amount of solvent on patches.

Boretech for the bore
G96 for outside and all over, and for the bore as a protectant at the end.

I'm a g96 guy as well, ballistol is also pretty good for protection and light cleaning stinks a bit though, for a dirty bore i just use hoppes no9 mostly i don't really let my guns get to dirty, but if cleaning a new milsurp its boiling water down the bore, soak for a while then scrub-a-dub-dub then i might bring the chemicals in if shes not playing ball, usually works a treat though

Sweets for heavy cleaning (copper or carbon) and eds red for a light clean. Always finish with Ed's red and then a dry patch.

Limited for choices? Just order online.

Rust inhibitors, Innox or Lannox (same same); or mineral oil (i.e. any gun oil).

Solvents, G96 is old... There are much better solvents out there. In fact, all of them are better than G96.

I spent a small fortune on heaps of Hoppes products which I pretty rarely use since I've got G96...

I use G96 for pretty much all cleaning now, then I still use the Hoppes lubricant on bolt, patch through and on ejectors and thats about it.

Iove this stuff so much I must be part kiwi. I spray down the whole rifle, stock and oil and wipe off excess.

Heavy oiling needs (long term barrel and bolt etc) I use sweets oil.

Hoppes 9 for cleaning fouling. Followed by a light solvent patch.

Any solvent for removing other gunk, I geneally dont get my stuff dirty enough to need more than a wipe down and re-oil, but will use wd40 or crc to clean stuff before reoiling.

For cleaning i usually use transmission fluid, and lot of the time lube with it as well, if not I'll use hydraulic oil for the lubing.

Funny you should say transmission oil, the automotive oils are great lubricants, much more R&D than gun oils. I recommend Boretech Cu+ for copper, the best solvent for copper I have used. Smells so much better than Sweets 762 as well. Automotive grease for rust protection on blued surfaces when in storage.

I use Pro-Shot Copper solvent for copper removal.
[Seems to work better than Sweets, and is water soluble]

I use G96 for general cleaning and lubrication; I reckon it has a MANLY pong to it!
I use a thin smear of the Pro-Shot bolt grease (in the syringe) for lubing the bolt lugs and/or slides
I am yet to try out the BoreTech C4 Carbon Remover I bought a few months back; I wanted something to loosen the carbon on various muzzle brakes.

Cheers,

Rod.

Butches Bore shine is a good cleaner. for Blueing on the outside of barrels I use a bit of saddle soap, its a bees wax type product. I use most of the cleaners and not been that impressed by butches for the money. It reminds me of another easily home made product.
