Muzzle brakes add velocity?

Post by heeple » 17 Jan 2018, 10:13 pm

I read somewhere else that muzzle brakes add velocity, old topic though with no explanation so couldn't find the answer why.

I don't really get why it would?

Anyone explain?

No they don't..!!!

They just make it louder for the person behind and/or beside the shooter.

What they do is reduce Recoil.... even on small calibres. They also change the POI for any given load.

If anything, velocity finishes when the bullet exits the barrel, once past the muzzle then the force may add some extra but that is very doubtful. The same as the crown on your muzzle has an affect, if it's damaged it hurts accuracy so adding something to the muzzle end...is it as accurate or not.

A .223Rem with a Muzzle Brake feels like a .22LR HV Rimfire... The idea is you can watch your impact... Great things, got two but took them off years ago....

Over a Chrony, I would say the Muzzle Break was LESS velocity..

Maybe they meant that with a brake, if recoil was the limiting factor a heavier load could be used? That could be interpreted as muzzle brake = higher velocity if it were poorly phrased.

They just feel like there is more velocity because of the amount of gas that hits you in the face.

It turns shooting into traveling down the highway with your head out the window

Yeah mate. I know the basics of a brake and what they do.

This supposed adding of velocity was a new one to me though so wasn't sure what I'd missed (if anything).

Maybe that's what they meant, wasn't what was said though.

It was that a brake itself increases velocity.

Not that using a brake allows a shooter to manage higher velocity ammo.

Maybe all a case of poor wording.

A suppressor can increase velocity, maybe they were confusing the two?

Or maybe they just didn't know WTF they were talking about.

That has been known to happen occasionally on the internet
