I have cheap $120-130 ebay one and the night time pictures could be a lot better. Thinking of getting a better one as I have been getting Sambar deer on it most nights. Only got one day time picture of the deer so far. It seem to take better pictures on moonlit nights.

They tend to sit down and nest during the day. Unless they have a very quite nice spot.

Nah, can't do it. Tried o upload a short video from my Wildgame trail camera but no go.

I bought it direct from Cabela's. Camera works well, simple to use etc but with freight, exchange rates and bank charges, not really worth the effort. just get the Aldi.

Here's a couple of photos from one of my Bushnell cameras. Keep in mind loss of resolution in downsizing pics for the forum.........

The time stamp is out, but you get the idea....

Looks like you get what you pay for, those night shots on the $50 unit don't look very useful. Should have gone to Aldi OB!!

My old cheapish Swann one does. The Bushnell's have more functions though, can be set to take untriggered photo's at intervals for example, so you get to see things that are not close enough to trigger it.

That Bushnell 'night' image above doesn't look like a complete night image. It's either late dusk or a very moon lit night.

Here is a post with a night shot from my camera:

And here's another. Probably not as clear as night as the Bushnell, but quite clear to about 12m.

Guys dont get carried away with picture quality, Its not a photography competition. As long as you can tell what animal and it has some distance to it (A IR torch could help) and what time it does the job. It probably doesn't even need that much distance to it really as you put them on animal trails.

This is largely true and I tend to agree, but I have picked up animals in the background when the camera was triggered by something closer. It's the same old thing that applies to everything in life isn't it, buy the best that you can (1) afford and (2) justify.

Oldbloke, that first image you posted (with the roos in it), looks like the IR filter hasnt retracted for daylight photos. One of our Leupold cameras used to do the same; it made the daylight photos have a pink tinge to them. When I've opened a few cameras up, there is a flip-over IR filter that is supposed to retract for daylight images.

Our most common stand-alone camera has been the Scoutguard SG550V8-HD, but I see there is a replacement for it that looks a bit better:
http://outdoorcameras.com.au/56/swift-3 ... -lens.html

At $300, I'm tempted to pick up a couple more. Last time I bought any cameras(~2014), they were over $350 each.

We usually get fairly clear B&W images out to roughly 15 metres from the camera with these Scoutguards.
This dog would have been roughly 7 metres distant?

About the only complaint was the IR LED's were visible(some animals saw them), but it seems that Swift 3C uses true blacklight flash.

Interestingly, we havent found that more expensive has bought us better cameras and/or images. Some of the more expensive cameras we've tried have turned out to be really slow to trigger, are really hard on batteries, or badly unreliable. One mdoel could even be located by the white noise it transmitted to a roo-shooters UHF radio!
These Scoutguards were one of the cheapest we've used, and they have proven to be about the best value for money.

Cheers,

Rod.

Just a follow up.
Camera did not seem to take night time images beyond about 4 meters and daytime images had a pink ting.
So returned for a refund. Another member purchased two and they would not trigger/work at all.

Buy a better camera.

So I replaced my trail camera with one of these.

https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/HT001-HD-12MP ... SwRE5aeCMI

On another thread one of the members bought one and it seemed OK so I bought one too. It arrived the other day and I've given it a bit of a test. The daytime pics are pretty good and the night time a big improvement on the other. Here are some samples. The IR are 18 and 12 paces in distance. The day time is a weeell close up He He........
