Game Trail Camera-Review.

Sooo, a few weeks ago I purchased a cheap Game Trail Camera. Here it is.

52 Dollar Game Trail camera.jpg

So thought I'd let you know what I think of it. Not the greatest BUT will do the job if your tight with money like me. Here is a typical pic after I left it in the bush for about 2 weeks. As you can see colour and picture quality leaves a fair bit to be desired. But to be fair you can see the animals fairly clearly so it will identify whats around but forget high quality images.Notice one is having a sniff.

The biggest issue I see with the camera is there are no options to change settings including time and date. So that's important how do you do that.
Put a micro SD card in it and switch it on for a minute a text file is created.
Now switch it off and remove the micro SD card. (i used a 16 gig)
Put it in a PC or in my case a android tablet.
Edit the text file to indicate the correct date & time. (dont change the format) Mine initially indicated 2015
When you edit it ensure you change it to the time you intent turning the camera back on. (so you need to anticipate this)
Insert the micro SD card.
When you turn the camera on the clock will start at the time in the text file.

Bit of a root around but seems to work. But you need to do this every time you set it up.

So thats the $52 Game trail camera. Oops comes with a strap to strap it to a tree.

None on the bush. I'll set it up over night in the back yard. Might pick up the neighbours cat. They just look like a B&W.

That is a pretty poor nighttime result, perhaps the LED's are not working? Might just be a setup issue, worth checking the manual.

I agree but the manual is basic to the extreme and the ONLY setting is on/off.

I'm gong to send the supplier an email. Useless at night.

So this is about half moon only tonight. I'm about 2 meters from the camera Id say at night limited to about 6 meters. Did a video of similar quality.
Sooo, its OK if there is a bit of light (Dawn & dusk) but at night pretty much forget it.

One thing I've noticed is once the time is set it doesn't change even though I've switched it on & off a few times. Thats good. . But might be different if you change the batteries.

Yeah those IR pics are pretty crap. My Bushnell cameras take good night pics, mind you the cameras are several times the price. Maybe that's what you get get for $50.......

perhaps a IR torch and things would be better. There aren't to many leds in the torch area. Then you could get a real id on Uncle Fester

I have cheap $120-130 ebay one and the night time pictures could be a lot better. Thinking of getting a better one as I have been getting Sambar deer on it most nights. Only got one day time picture of the deer so far. It seem to take better pictures on moonlit nights.

Nah, can't do it. Tried o upload a short video from my Wildgame trail camera but no go.

I bought it direct from Cabela's. Camera works well, simple to use etc but with freight, exchange rates and bank charges, not really worth the effort. just get the Aldi.

Here's a couple of photos from one of my Bushnell cameras. Keep in mind loss of resolution in downsizing pics for the forum.........

Looks like you get what you pay for, those night shots on the $50 unit don't look very useful. Should have gone to Aldi OB!!

My old cheapish Swann one does. The Bushnell's have more functions though, can be set to take untriggered photo's at intervals for example, so you get to see things that are not close enough to trigger it.

That Bushnell 'night' image above doesn't look like a complete night image. It's either late dusk or a very moon lit night.

Here is a post with a night shot from my camera:
viewtopic.php?p=124299#p124299

And here's another. Probably not as clear as night as the Bushnell, but quite clear to about 12m.

Guys dont get carried away with picture quality, Its not a photography competition. As long as you can tell what animal and it has some distance to it (A IR torch could help) and what time it does the job. It probably doesn't even need that much distance to it really as you put them on animal trails.

This is largely true and I tend to agree, but I have picked up animals in the background when the camera was triggered by something closer. It's the same old thing that applies to everything in life isn't it, buy the best that you can (1) afford and (2) justify.
