Is it edible?

Just wondering what the pig hunters out there do with em.

Dog meat only? BBQ rib? What's the go?

I know a couple of guys in North QLD that get pigs for meat.

Instead of shooting them in field they round them up and hold them in pens for a few days before slaughtering them.

A few days on clean food and water helps clean them up apparently.

It's the same meat if you get it in the wild or at the butcher.

You need to look at animals on a case by case basis though.

Things like worms, liver discolouration, other signs of ill-health and you would probably leave it alone.

If it has healthy looking meat and organs though, it should be good to eat.

Not a butcher/doctor but I can I've eaten it on more than one occasion and been fine.

And enjoyed it...

Like AusC said. Checking for unhealthy or diseased organs is a good method. Especially the liver.

That and stick it over the fire for a few hours and I think you're up for some good tucka.

TBH I'm not really sure.

I can ask next time I speak with them.

Off the top of my head I think it's just time in the clean pen. No mention of a vet coming out or anything beforehand. And they aren't animal docs either so...

I will try and ask.

Not just for pigs either. Same for rabbits, or whatever else you're after.

Shot placement is additionally important for taking meat too.

You want to make every effort not to hit the intestines etc. You don't want to spill all that over your meat.

Head or heart where possible without hitting the rest.

Hi you Blokes,

I can't vouch for this, but I've been told that all the pigs that disappear into the CHILLERS, come back to us at a later date as METWURST or SALAMI etc.

I used to hunt the mountain boars in NSW years ago, and was told back then that a certain parasite worm or egg that they get is not necessarily killed by heat, ie: cooking, but it is killed if well and truly frozen before it is cooked.

I thought you can't be too sure, so I always did both.

Not a bad idea freezing first then cooking.

More meat than you can eat from one animal in a sitting anyway obviously not even really more work.
