Pig Bones

I couldn't think of where else to put this, so, this will have to do.

I've got some sun bleached pig long bones, and I want to try to incorporate them in a knife or two, but after search of google, I can't find any suggestions for stabilising them.

Has anyone done this with pig or similar?
Has anyone got any ideas?

Try looking in NZ. They make heaps of stuff out of bone. Wife bought a bone hair pin over there. Lots of culture type stuff. And I'll bet knife handles too.

Historical y it was wale bone mostly cow bone these days.

Some are using acrylic or epoxy but it sounds like a lot of embuggerance.

I would use a non thermoplastic quality epoxy, not any of the cheap five min crap

The method is as important as the stabiliser.

I imagine this a "paint on" scenario.

Yes Lazarus. You need it thin enough to “take up” into the pores or cells. I used to turn various timbers, crochety or cranky grain that I would stabilize with epoxy. Don’t do it anymore, probably wasn’t all that smart from an ohs perspective. Take some care when you sand or grind it. P

Most cactus juice/sap is mostly comprised of natural sugar.
Can't help but wonder what that would do to bone.

Dunno but I've read quite a few times cactus juice is used by knife makers to stabilise wood and antler

Well you didn't say it was a manufactured product now did you.

I and probably lots of others were thinking you were referring to actual Cactus juice/sap.

Handy to know now though,,, what the actual product is.
