I've done the necessary course, club membership and have applied for the R-Licence etc. My question is not regarding that side of it, it's more around productive areas. I have free accomodations in Sydney with family members so that's a starting point. Is there enough deer to go around on public land in the right areas? Or is it hard hunting/don't bother? Please remember this is all new to me.
Cheers, Al.
It depends where you go. I would avoid state forests and look to make friends with private landholders. I have had limited success anywhere near Sydney or the Central Coast. Further afield in rural and regional areas along the great dividing range are better. I've had a lot of luck around Murrurundi and Glenn Innes. That said, I recently saw a deer when I was driving for work near Windsor (near Scheyville National Park) in North-West Sydney, so they're obviously around, just not many left in state forests near town..
I recently applied for the public land hunting lottery for Maragle South State Forest; Mannus State Forest (Seymours section); and Mannus State Forest (bows only section) with no luck. So I won't bother with state forests this year.
Also, one of my friends joined a hunting club last year in the hope of finding deer near Sydney. One year of meetings and unmet promises (they never went anywhere near a deer), so he left and joined me looking for private properties.
