Tactical... WTF?

Game hunting and large prey. Deer stalking, hunting with hounds. Boar, pigs etc., large prey, culling, hunting large feral animals.

Tactical... WTF?

Post by juststarting » 16 Aug 2015, 10:10 pm

Why do I keep seeing tactical on all shooting related s*#it. My T3 CTR - T for tactical, WTF is tactical about it? Scope, something, something, tactical. Accessory X - tactical. WTF does this mean? Why?

N.B.
This is a question as much as a rant, but primarily a question.

They slap a 3" picatiny rail in a rifle and call it "Tactical" as it adds some credibility or military type appeal to it. I am a fanboi of "Tacticool" rifles but I also like the traditional blue steel and walnut classics as well. I'm thinking the marketing guys are looking for ways to make their rifles more appealing to the younger crowd.

If you add Tactical in the name you can raise the price by 20%...

Coz Tactical makes it better just like red cars are faster...

Screw tactical. Give me reliability, consistency and accuracy.

It seems lately, though, that anything not blued and wood with a weaver or picatinny is being labelled as tactical.

I think picatiny is a great idea, a standard as such for mounting scopes or accessories has to be good as you can swap from rifle to rifle without having to change rings is very appealing to many. I remember all the grief from years ago of trying to find specific set of bases and rings to suit a particular rifle. Apart from my Sanko's that use Optilok rings all my rifles have picatiny bases so swapping scopes or getting the correct type or height rings is much easier. I have a couple of the Atlas picatiny mount bipods which I can put on or take off much faster then any Harris bipods. Think of picatiny as a "Standard" used to secure accessories, so long as an item complies to the standard it should fit your rifle.

Just another word they use to suck d**kheads in with, apparently "Tactical" is cool or something - personally I think its used to suck in tools who couldn't get in the real Tactical group (army) :wtf:

Was just interested in the definition, perhaps I was missing something. I sensed it was something to do with making the equipment look a bit mean so to speak, but thought, perhaps, perhaps there is something marketing people know that I don't. Anyway, that's the end of this...

Bigfellascott, I wouldn't go as far as calling the army (any army) a tactical group :p

Don't get me wrong, i have nothing against tactical or tacticool, and love picatinny.

But don't get sucked in to paying more for the same thing simply because its tactical. Use your noggin and you'll be right

Too right mate, a classic example I can think of is the Boyds Tactical Stock, all it was was a laminated stock with some sort of black paint type coating on it - then it was called tactical :unknown: funny thing was they changed the name to Pro Varmint a while back because it was costing them sales - now it can be imported here again because its no longer got "Tactical" in the name (everything else is the same just a name change) :unknown: .

Yes there is plenty of it out there, doesn't do much for me but that can only mean there is a market for it.

Things like a picatinny are functional like Brett says, even if they have the look. A lot of it is more style than substance though.

That's the "elite" version bro, you know for the ones with way too much monnnney - they need to be relieved of a bit of it so they put the "special" tag of "Pro" to make em feel like they are getting something "Extra Special" :D

I'm feeling so last season now I've heard about that latest Pro Tactical range of rifles, time to clean out the safe and hit the shops for some new fashions. Damn, I sound just like my wife when she's wanting clothes...hmmm.

If a pic rail makes it tactical, then even a timber Sako can be tactical? I don't have anything black though, except scopes, do they count too?
