Pig Sign?

Post by Gaznazdiak » 07 Jun 2018, 11:17 am

Do we have any turd detectives out there?

I have found what I think might be signs of Porky paying a visit to the house paddock.
I don't know how brazen they can get, but these signs are less than 100m from the house. About 2km down the back there is obvious signs of activity with several areas completely ripped up but this is the first time I've seen anything up here.

The reason It's confusing me is there is only a tiny bit of ground disturbance next to the turds, but it is definitely not rabbit diggings.

Also the footprint is new since yesterday and the paddock has been empty for over a week.

:geek: The Diet of pigs greatly affects the shape, size and consistency of the droppings but I think you're on the right track, along with the footprint ( bit hard to tell, though) - PIGS.

Is it usual for them to come that close to a house?

Also it seems like if it is a pig, that it is only one, do they often get about on their own?

It may seem a silly question but I know very little about their habits other than the obvious massive damage they have done down the back, which considering it covers almost an acre must be a full sounder.

As can be seen in the close up of the scat, there are two deposits, the one on the rock obviously older and dryer than the other, which would suggest that whatever it is has visited the spot more than once.

Yeah that track looks like pig. Photo below of a fresh track to compare. I regularly get pigs coming into the horse yard for the bananas and molasses that I feedem ( about 25m from the homestead)usually a solitary pig will be a boar and if it's young and never been hunted they can be pretty bold. :drinks:

The cheeky buggers.
I think I might have to put my new budget trail cam down there tonight and see if I can discover what time he's coming through and see if I can give him the good news with a Brenneke.

Had a young boar that would pass about 25yds. from the front door of the homestead, and scratch his bum on the house yard corner post on his trip from the shearing shed to the dam. Was that regular you could almost set the watch by him.

If it's not pressured, why not.

I was just down there setting up the camera when I remembered there is an active wombat burrow about 150m from there, so it could well be.
I also had a closer look at the scat and it's all vegetable matter, for what that might be worth.
We may know tomorrow.

I'm not sayin whether it is or isn't, but as for the porkers coming close to a house is concerned, they get pretty cheeky during the night.

Some time back I was working in my workshop with a 9" angle grinder late at night, and when I switched it off I could hear both the Rottie and the Shephard doing their "there's an intruder here" type barking just outside.
I went outside, but couldn't see or hear anything.
But the dogs kept carrying on.

So I jumped on the quad and went for a look with the headlights.

Only 25 metres out from the house yard, both Mr and Mrs Porky and the kids casually walked across and through the headlight beams.

What annoyed me was I didn't think to grab a rifle, and wasn't expecting to see what I did.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Could it be that a pig caught a whiff of wombat poo and came for a taste?

Well, now we know who owns the scat.
Seems Mr/Mrs Wombat noticed my robot paparazzo hanging on the fence and had a go at it. To get the angle right I had to prop a stick under it, which comes into one of the shots as he/she keeps coming back.
I thought they were supposed to have really poor vision, there was nothing else on that bit of fence of interest so I can only assume it was the camera.
Maybe it was a lonely girl wombat and I smell like a male.
Can't Imagine why I would smell, I have a shower every year.
Whether I need it or not.

Yep, and I'm inclined to think it was wombat poo that had been disturbed or stepped on, making it confusing & hard to clearly identify.

We had a wombi that use to like climbing our wood pile to take a crap. Generally speaking, wombi crap is very firm and uniform in appearance. Sort of like dark green, squared off brickettes; like they had a snap lock butt.

Gwion you left out the most important attribute of wombat poo. If it is disturbed as in you step in it or worse sit in it. (It hides in grass :D ) It is the most fowl smelling crap on the planet. It also sticks like s**t to a blanket. I am sure that's were they got that term.
