.243 suitable for hunting pigs?

Post by Grated » 25 Jul 2013, 1:47 pm

Hi All,

I'm looking into making a trip to NSW for a pig hunt with a mate.

He's going with his regular mates and I'm basically as +1 for this as I haven't been pig hunting before.

30 cal stuff seems to be the favourite from his crew, but do you think my .243 will be suitable for this?

Cheers.

Yes mate,

For your average pig .243 will do the business. You would want 30cal+ for the biggest guys though.

Get yourself some heavy pills, 95-105gr and they should do the job on most of your game.

Other puny calibre rifles... What man would want you now?

.243 is a proper game calibre. I know a lot of people poo-poo it in favour of 30 calibre but with heavy pills and decent placement it's a serious hitter.

Stay away from 55gr and the like for your pills and you shouldn't have any problems.

Should Pigzilla appear in the bushes you'll have your friends there with their 30-06's to save you :P

95gr ballistic tips have always served me well in my .243 turning foxes into mist.

Wouldn't have any worries with a regular size pig.

Sounds like I'm on the right track.

Picked up 2 boxes of Nosler BT's in 95gr this morning :D

Have been out to the range since with the 95gr to test out accuracy, and they worked well in my rifle.

Keen to send some out at a pig or two now :D

Suitable and then some...

.243 with 95-100gr pills is a calibre to be reckoned with.
