What is your favorite gun to use when hunting state forests?

Game and varmint hunting. Deer stalking, hunting with hounds. Culling, hunting feral animals and vertebrate pest control.

What is your favorite gun to use when hunting state forests?

Post by Time2shoot » 12 Dec 2018, 3:56 pm

I was curious to hear what everyone's favorite/go to gun is when hunting state forests and why? Obviously it depends on what your going after.

Also, what would you choose out of a 30-30 or a 12 gauge and why?

Look forward to reading all your opinions

i don't get to shoot state forest (yet ) i've mostly shot granite ridge high country and grazing paddocks around tenterfield. so bolt action in 6.5x55 is my choice. got a 308 sako to try out soon . 30-30 with a scope out of the two choices. unless it's wabbits i'm after

7mm-08 Ruger American. 160gn SP for deer, 100gn HP for small game, and subsonic 145gnSP for close-range - just a matter of changing the magazine to suit.

I would go .30-30 over 12ga., shotguns are too narrow in focus for me.

Either 223 or 30-06. 30-30 would be fine from foxes to medium sized deer.
Hunt safe, look after the bush & plug more pests. Better to load on the mild side. :o The greatest invention in the history of man is beer. :drinks: "Often the written message doesn't convey all of the information"

Ruger #1, cause they look so pretty.

I don't have a 30-30 or a 12 gauge, but unless I am trying to knock birds of of the sky I would choose a centerfire.

Why the question? Are you off for a hunt in a state Forrest?

I used to take a 35mm canon when I went wandering in the forest.

Now I have an SLR, I take that these days, 'cause it's digital.

Achtung herr dumbkoffs. I use gud German made MG42. 8x57 ,1400 rounds per minute. I borrow it from my gud uncle Herman. That’s right, Herman the German . Its only slightly used third Reich surplus. Uncle Herman moved here in 1946 from Argentina. And you fools! You going about hunting cute little bunny wabbits the wrong way. You use flamenwerffer ( flame thrower) when zey are still in their burrows . Liddle bunnies pre cooked . Ist good hunting ja?

I live in WA so the only hunting that is permitted is on private land. If I lived in a state that permitted hunting in state forests my first priority would be ensuring I understood my legal and ethical responsibilities and being utterly compliant with them. My choice of firearm and calibre would then be determined by the target species I know to be in the area. When hunting I would make sure I took a safe shot that gives a quick and humane kill in accordance with ethical hunting practices. So to answer the original question you need to do your homework first and then be guided by the requirements to be law abiding and ethical. If hunting rabbits at short range, a shotgun or rim fire rifle may be a good choice. If hunting larger species a centrefire rifle may be appropriate. The choice of which is determined by lawfulness and safety (which have to be the paramount concerns) and humaneness of the kill.
