Where to Start Hunting In Victoria

Post by JTIM » 29 Jan 2019, 7:37 pm

Hi there,

I've been shooting for a little while mainly just vermin on a property but looking to get into some bigger game hunting. Ideally want to start going after some sambar in Victoria. Im not after a trophy stag or anything, more just looking for experience and to gain some knowledge about some decent hunting areas, gear and strategies to use when first starting game hunting in Vic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jacob

Jacob,
You can hunt ferals in any SF in Vic.
Otherwise what SWest said and buy a game lic
Do your homework and put in the time and you should do ok. East of the Hume hwy is the go.
Just a friendly tip. First post and ask for locations isnt exactly the way to go. Perhaps buy a couple of books on the subject.
Hunt safe, look after the bush & plug more pests. Better to load on the mild side. :o The greatest invention in the history of man is beer. :drinks: "Often the written message doesn't convey all of the information"

I was all set in a nice quiet gully 5 or 6 klms from a track in Wombat SF, remaining stationary for hours, when suddenly I could hear a Sambar slowly moving ever closer.
The anticipation building I ignored the mosquitoes repeatedly biting and gently chambered a round in anticipation.
Controlling my breathing I saw the bush gently moving as the magnificent stag slowly moved through the brush. He appeared through the trees, a magnificent beast, much taller than me .
Awaiting a clear shot I incrementally raised my rifle awaiting the moment.
Then a f***ing unicorn jumped out and scared the bastard away.

Are you a member of SSAA? I got an email from them late last year, apparently they were releasing updated and detailed maps of where you can and can't hunt in Victoria.
I don't think they've been released yet, but am keen to have a look.
