Scope Zero Distance

Post by 2freeq » 04 May 2019, 6:13 pm

Hi all,

After spending the last year target shooting, I've been invited to control pests on a hilly but open property.
Question is, At what distance do you zero your scopes into? I was thinking 100m but a salesman at a store today told me to sight in an inch high at 200m
What distance do you sight into on your hunting rifle?

Cheers.

1" to 2" high at 100m will work for 99% of calibre for 99% of honest hunting situations...

I have always used my own method, which I now know to be similar to the MPBR method. When I was a youngster, and got my .243, I figured if I sighted it in about an inch high at 100m, then it would be on at bout 150m, and a bit low at 200m. So given I was hunting pigs, that meant that I could pretty much aim dead on at any range I was hunting.

So if you look at the ballistics of your rifle, and your intended target, you should be able to set it up much the same way.

Depends on the caliber.
Any of the flat-shooting cartridges, like .204, .223, .243, 7mm-08 and such I zero around 220-270m so I can aim pretty much dead on out to 300m. This would be around the inch high at 200m or so that you mentioned.
.44Mag I zero at 100m.
.22LR I zero at 50m.

For smaller calibers with decent scopes I zero at 100 and dial for longer shots after using a range finder. For larger calibers with low magnification I lead things a little bit if the range is longer than the 100 metre zero. Not usually shooting a big bore out at 300 metres plus in any case.
