Average shot distances on deer - NSW and VIC public lands

Hi Guys
I'm curious about your average distances that you've taken deer on public lands in NSW and Victoria.
On the NSW public hands where I hunt, I often find that the designated hunting areas consist of scrubby native bush lands or 8 foot high sapling pine forests. Yes, occasionally I come across clearings where I can see 200m, but that's not the norm. Sometimes I wonder why I'm carrying a 308 for shots between 30m to 50m.
What are your average distances that you've taken deer on public lands in NSW and VIC?
I'm not talking about your longest or shortest, but your average distances. I look forward to your stories about your experiences.
Cheers.

murphy's law can bite ya in the butt. the next hunting trip i leave my 6.5x55 at home and take my lever gun , i garuntee all my available shots will be over 150 yards   . better to have the reach of the 308 and not need it, than to need it and not have it :D

Yeah right. I haven't heard of that study, but that's what I'm starting to see from my experiences, for NSW public lands anyway. Cheers

Most of the pine forests around me have deer in em and honestly I would say 50m would almost be a long shot some times, but better to have too much gun than not enough I guess.
