Yeah it isn't famous for deer, and the ranger knew we were strictly shooting ferals, I did tell him none of us had game licences and we were after pigs mainly.
As for the plantation, there is a few marked on the map, a couple of the really big ones said 'private pine plantation, restricted access' on the map, and when driving around them it was signed. But the one we were on was just part of the forest. Though when we arrived (at night) we got slightly lost because it was bigger than what the map said. According to the map the start was the campaspe river, we couldn't understand why when we walked the length of it, the river was at the end. Once we went back the next morning we saw that it had been extended both sides. Which was good because when there were people at one end (cultivating drugs or something) so we just moved a k up and shot in the opposite direction.

Also caught spotlighting with a .22, they'd have to be mentally challenged to think you were hunting deer

Good you got to speak to a ranger. As for the people u saw, did they have shovels and working under moon light only? Maybe just composting something :?

Always speak to the ranger, shows I'm using my initiative and making the effort to stay within the law and inform them what's going on. Bonus you get tips on animals whereabouts and if something does go wrong emergency wise they have an idea of your area of operation. If some one is out there doing the wrong, you kinda have a toe to stand on, because you were at X, when they were at Y, you don't have the same calibre, also why would I give them my name, number and address if I was going to engage in illegal activity.

As for the other people, no it was day time, couldn't exactly make what they were doing out as they were on the other side, however it did look like shoveling something.

I leave them alone, they leave me alone :P
I'd rather shoot in peace. like fishing, when people asks if you've caught anything. F off, I'm fishing.

Wow that's disappointing to hear WildHunter.

I've got a few days off this week and am actually planning to go for a hunt/scout/walk through the forest tomorrow morning. Will be looking for any feral animals to shoot (.22 - Savage Mark II FV-SR).

A tourist pulls into a small country town, and observes what is evidently the village idiot, fishing in a horse trough.

He can't resist, so ambles up and asks the kid if he's caught anything.

Sadly not, apparently we were at the wrong end of the forest. It was a very half arsed trip too given we decided to go back to Melbourne for the night because my mate wanted his bed  Then returned lunch time till dusk.

Hopefully you see something at least. Back from my Wombat expedition, didn't see one (or hear or even find a single trace) feral animal. I was out walking/stalking through the forest North West of Blakeville for about 2.5 hours.
Saw 4 wallabies (heard another 2 hopping away before I could sight them) and 2 wombats... that was it. Will try another section of forest next time but I'm not sure I'll find anything.

Let us know.

I think I've lost a bit of faith in Wombat State Forest lately.

Seems for a while now the story from hunters has been they got something in the past, or saw sign but no game.

Pickings have gotten too slim maybe?

Yeah it's starting to appear really bad for hunting, despite the rangers saying they saw pigs here and goats there. However for 4WDing it's pretty badarse I gotta admit.

I live in woodend and was looking for a good place to get pigs or foxes and the first thing that came to my mind was Cobaw state forest I might have a look around wombat soon though. I don't want to change the subject from wombat but what have people heard about Cobaw? I heard there's pigs but you need dogs to find them

Just 5 or 6 months ago I saw some pig poo in the ol Wombat. My last visit. But as I have said,,, thin on the ground, you would be lucky to score. Still a good spot to go for a stroll.
